Refusing meds

I have a 15 yr old who had a bad reaction to Concerta a few years ago.  He is extremely bright, actually gifted, so was able to get by in middle school.  High school has been a different story.  His grades are horrible, and 95% of that is due to disorganization- losing or not turning in work, doing things late, etc.  He can get good test grades but gets bad grades becasue of missing assignments.  last year, he agreed to see his doctor again, and accepted a prescription to try Focalin XR which his brother has been using very successfully.  He, however, refused to even try it once after we left the office.  He could b e driving now but I won't let him becasue while he thinks he can function without meds, he just hasnt been doing it.

Anyone facing similar difficulties or have any suggestions?

If he is nervous to take medication, how about trying something that will only last a few hours just to try it out?  Alternatively, what about trying it on a day he will be home from school?  Perhaps you and him could plan a day together on the weekend, where he could try out the medication.  Then he wouldn't have to be scared since you would be right there with him.  Perhaps you could think of a relaxing activity such as a special lunch and a blockbuster movie.

Try reading "No Mind Left Behind" by Dr. Adam Cox, which has non-medication strategies to help kids with ADHD and related issues. There are whole chapters on organization, planning, attention, flexibility, etc.

You should maybe try some more natural methods of controlling your son's ADHD.  All your doing by trying to give him these meds is supporting huge pharmacutical corporations and screwing with his brain chemistry.
