What is the preferred treatment for ADHD?

What is the preferred treatment for ADHD? I've been taking Ritalin for a while. It doesn't seem to be working as well as it used to. Should I ask my doctor if I can try Adderall? Something else?

you already take seizure medicine and you are also taken adhd medicine to.Didn't the your doctor tell you that the adhd medicine could make your seizures worse.Since they go to the brain and that is where the seizures come from.I will not put my son on any medicine for his adhd.the side effects are not worth it.and with all the side effects I have to worry about already with the seizures medicines no way.

my son took adderal to and no child should take that, wish I had none more back in 2005.

Thank you for all the information! Thankfully I do have insurance. As for seizures, I take seizure meds too. I would have to take stimulants even if I didn't have ADHD. I have autonomic dysfunction. Thanks for the help though everyone!

Hi  I am kind of new to this site and hope you read what I have to say.

first look this up if you have not already  http://adhd.emedtv.com/concerta/concerta-side-effects.html.

You will see that one of the side effects to conerta are seizures.

When I saw what you had to say about your son is the same this I use to get form my son teacher at school ,and telling my son doctor about what was happening a few time's.
he finally sent my son for an egg because one day the school nurse said she thou my son may be having seizures and his doctor thou it would come back normal and to our surprise it did not.

you see my son was doing the same as you son was at school ,because he was and still is having night time seizures. And you can't always tell when he is having them.
and now he is having 3 different kind of seizures and the medicines he is on is not working. To the point that he just had the VNS surgery and not we have to wait and see if this will help him and try take him off some of his 5 medicines that he takes for just his seizures.

and he is not on any medicine for the add or the adhd.they can make seizures worse and I wont put him back on anything that can cause more problems to his brain.

they now think my son has lenoxx gastro syndrome.witch you can look up.

I do pray that no other child  and parent has to go threw what my
mine  has ,the side effects to these medicines can not be reversed.

my son was on aderall at  first before he went onto the conerta, but was not until he was on the conerta that he got worse, because his teacher said the aderall was not working and that is why he was changed to the conerta.

wish I had not put him on anything.

there are also other things going on with children,it doesn't always have to be adhd and wish doctors would check for everything before starting people on these medicines.and also they would find out better info after being on the medicines what it is  doing  to people.

thank you and hope to help people so they don't have to go threw what my son and my family have to go threw every day.

you see I worry every day that my son may die ,or never have a normal life and have to be taken care of, and that one of my family members will be able to take care of him if something where to happen to his dad or I.

So please look up all the side effects to things before you start taken things yourself or given to your children. And make sure they are worth what the side effects that you may end up with.
To me they are not worth it,and I still have to deal with the side effects of all my son seizures medicines.Because his doctor said that if he dont take these medicines they may not be able to bring him out of one if he had a really bad one.

I also forgot to tell you that I took Ritilan back in the mid 90's and it made me feel crazy. I felt ill all the time (Like I was going to throw up) and I also had a lot of stomach problems with it. That is when I was first put on Dexidrene and it made me feel like I was on rocket fuel and then a serious crash after about 5 hours. I asked to be switched to something else and that is when Adderall was first hitting the market. At the time Adderall was brand name and it was about 250.00 a month. I take (2) 20 mgs a day divided and sometimes one or one and a half. Now that it is generic, it is cheaper, but still kind of pricey. I started on 10 mgs twice daily and was moved up to 20 twice daily because it did not seem to work as well after about two weeks. The two 20mgs made a huge difference and that has not changed yet and hopefully it will not.

I have Health Care if you want to call it that since it does not cover prescriptions, just medical and hospital procedures and it is as much as most peoples car payment. If you do not have prescription coverage, there are a few ways to save money on your meds. You may know about these already, but I will tell you anyway just in case.

I downloaded a card from a site called www.coast to coastrx.com and it saves me a bunch of money. My 90 day supply of Adderall is 65 to 70 dollars at Target. It is a free card and it works. Without the card, it runs right at 200.00 for 180 tablets. Quite a savings. I have been using it or over a year now and have had no problems. It also allows you to check around at other local pharmacies to compare pricing. You just give them your name and email and they allow you to print the card. It just creates one right there on the page you are on and you do not fill out any forms at all or give personal information. Call me parinoid, but they more than likely know that stuff anyway. Cut it out and take it to the pharmacy in your area that takes it and they keep the info in their system. I figured there was a catch, but I have not encountered any problems so far.  There is also another card called True Care Advantage and it works the same way. Not sure of their website, but I am sure you can find it. You can look at both sites, and it has a tool bar that allows you to compare medicine and pharmacies that accept their card in your area. Target, seems to be the lowest, followed by Wal-Mart.

Hope this helps you and also good luck with finding what works best for you. Sorry for the long replies, it’s the Add at work again.  Centxbear

Hi there, I would definitely try the Adderall. I tried Ritilan and I hated it. It made me fell terrible. Also Ithink the plain adderall works better than Adderall XR. I have better control over the regular Adderall than theXR. If I don't feel like I need my afternoon dose, I dpon't take it. I was on 30mg XRs and they kept me up all night and ther is nothing you can do about it unless you have a sedative of some sort like Xanax or Ambien. Dexidrene works ok ,but it has a sharp crash to it and the Adderall just kind of wears off. At least that is how it workes for me.

We are all different so, it would not hurt to try it. Even the Adderall regular oral tablets kept me up the first few nights, but it has worked best for me.  Centxbear
