hi
my son is 7 yrs old and is in a class with 11 year olds.  he is top of his class but his teachers complain he daydreams all the time.  is so clever but ALL of his teachers in the “New kids” assessment said “Absent minded” “Unable to focus” “Has to be told several times.” Now he could just be a dreamer like I was or it could be his emotional state (being 9 and not 11). We are trying to avoid going to a Clinical psychologist who will tell us he is FREAKING ADHD (every child is diagnosed with this if he dares to get bored in Maths!) But at the end of the day we want whats best for him. His marks are ridiculous (87% English, Sciences in the 90’s!) His teachers all say obviously the academic side is not a problem. So if  it is emotional, then surely keeping him down a year will be worse for his concentration level. He has done Grade 4 (and has the certificates!) He will be so bored that he will be even less able to concentrate. Shame, he came and asked me if his teachers had written anything bad about him. I told him no they said he was sweet, gentle, friendly, very bright but not able to focus. I asked him why and he said “I just can’t help thinking of my friends and when it’s going to be time to go and play with them! And also, I look out of the window. I couldn’t do that at my old school cos they were too high up. I think about all the trees and the grass and beautiful things that God has made.”

Couldn’t you just squeeze him???

Mich I am so scared to waste his amazing little brain. You have to be here to understand how difficult this is as he is beyond his years. Yesterday he said “Mom what do you think came first – chicken or egg?” I said don’t even go there that is an age old argument. The chicken had to come from an egg but where did the egg come from and so on so on. He said “Nope, it was the chicken cos God make all animals fully grown. I read it in the bible.

what do you think

Why is a 7 year old child with 11 year old ones?  you need to find a school for gifted children with his own age. God Bless you.

This is ridiculous.  Your son is obviously a gifted child.  The school should not be complaining just because your son is 7 and is just being a typical boy when it comes to his behavior.  If he had bad grades and was defiant then maybe they could complain but what is wrong with these teachers today.

There are really good teachers out there and then there are some that just ruin the reputation of the rest of them.

The problem here is that they do not want to deal with this due to the fact that in one more year he will be taking state tests and they are afraid that he will not score high due to his daydreaming.  They think that since he does this that he will not be able to remain focused enough to score high on these tests and the easy way out is to clinically diagnose him with a problem that will put him in a classroom and IEP(Individualized Education Program) which will protect them.  I know this totally from experience since my son has ADHD and has been held back from achieving all that he is capable of achieving.  This is where the problem really lies.  Schools get money from the state based on these test scores.

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

You are his parents and have every right to choose the best path for your child no matter what the school system says.  Gifted children are often overlooked because the some teachers and schools do not understand or have the capability of dealing with.  That is something that some teachers may understand but do not want to deal with because it is not the norm according to them.

Every child is different and should be able to learn at their own level and ability.  I do not understand why this is so hard for them to understand.  This did not go on when I was a child.

I hope this helps.  GOD BLESS
