EMG - how easy to mess up

Doctor, how tough or how knowledgeable a doctor does it take to perform an adequate EMG. After being certain for years that I have a slow moving form of ALS, I now do not know what to think. I had a EMG done 2 weeks ago and the doctor said it was normal. I was so sure it wouldn't be I don't know what to think now. This follows EMGs in 2001 and 2002, both said to be normal. The one done 2 weeks ago was by a Vanderbilt educated neuro, so I should feel confident in his abilities. But is ALS a disease that needs to be looked into at a ALS clinic to be sure? I have assymteric weakness, twitching, and breathing has declined. Don't know what else it could be?

Thanks.

Hi

I had a normal EMG and a normal Nerve Conductor, but have been recently diagnosed with Myositis by a Neurologist with no muscle biopsy to prove this.  I am being treated with cortizone injections.  So don't let technology confuse your mind - often what the Dr finds at that moment in time when carrying out certain tests (because of the delays bt the actual pain and the time you actually get to see your Dr) can show a totally different picture should this test have been performed whilst you were going through a bout of twitching, tiresome breathing etc - find a specialist that looks deeper into your ailments.  Also there are blood tests that are also helpful.

Take care
