I just posted a very lengthy post on a depersonalization forum. If you search my name, johnis 64, you'll find it. I don't know how to post it on another forum. Trauma I spoke of was about child sexual abuse by and to a member of the family. Let me know if it helps.

You can cut and paste the information here. Anyways some illness caused by sexual abuse tend to be psychosomatic such as depression, PTSD, others are personality and attachment disorders, disassociation, low self esteem, eating disorders, OCD, repressed memories, intrusive thoughts etc.

Hi. You received a comment from faithfulchild which was a little worrisome to me. faithfulchild said that some illnesses caused by sexual abuse tend to be "psychosomatic" and goes on to list  depression, PTSD, personality and attachment disorders , OCD, etc. They may have meant psychological or psychiatric, NOT psychosomatic. Psychosomatic means physical symptoms such as headaches, nausea and vomiting, ect. The others listed are real disorders. Thanks!

johnis64 - psychosomatic doesn't mean not real.  It means disorders caused by emotional trauma,  stress,  etc.  They are very real disorders,  but they aren't caused by pathogens (like viruses or bacteria) or by physical trauma (like gunshot wounds) or physical defects (like babies born with  heart valve abnormalities).

PTSD,  attachment disorders,  eating disorders,  panic disorders,   are all psychosomatic.    That is,  the root cause is emotional trauma.

PSYCOSOMATIC:  Generally pertaining to that which is presumed to have both psychic (mental) and somatic (bodily) components.  The usual implication here is that these two aspects interact, each having an impact on the other.  This is from my Dictionary of Psychology, second edition by Arthur S. Reber  It's quite a few years old, but the definition has not changed.  Basically, what it is saying is that if you have a physical symptom that is caused by a anxiety related issue, stress issue, etc.  It does not make the symptom any less real or painful.  I suffer from depression and before being diagnosed, I often had back aches, I had done nothing to hurt my back, there was nothing wrong with me internally to cause them, they were psychosomatic.
PTSD, Attachment Disorders, Eating Disorders, Panic Disorders, Depersonalization, Derealization, Dissociation, Anxiety, Depression, and the like are VERY REAL DISORDER.  Many of them have chemical components to them, but they also have many other emotional, behavioral, and psychological components to them.  They are highly treatable, but it takes a good doctor and therapist.
As for the persons initial question, there are a wide variety of disorders that can occur due to childhood trauma.  Dissociative Identity Disorder and other forms of Dissociation, PTSD, depression, Boarderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety, Sleep problems, OCD, and so on and so on.  Medically it would probably depend on the what exactly occured.  I am only saying all of this as a person who is dealing with it, has been for most of the 2000's, and who has been dealing with a mood disorder for a lot longer than i care to say.
The most important thing I can say is that if you really thing that you need help, see a doctor (psychiatrist) and/or therapist who specialize in dealing with traumatic memories and childhood trauma.  You might try googling Sidran Foundation, they are rather knowledgeable about trauma issues.
I hope this helps, but please know that you can take what you like and leave the rest.  Good luck and take care CCV1947.
