As Jo said tell the Doctor you wish to wean off it ,it is well known to be addictive , a lot of Doctors will only prescribe Xanax for a short time ,do it slowly and withdrawal will be less severe .Good Luck

Slowly, under a doctors supervision. That stuff is nasty!

You surely know the answer to that one. Slowly. Make a regimen. Cut back 10 per cent every week. When you are almost done, skip the occasional dose. A doctor would tell you more or less the same thing. There is no trick to it. Just common sense and a basic knowledge of how addiction works.

What is not mentioned is that you have to want to quit.

I dont know how u get ur zanax either by Dr. or by friends, but if u really want to stop then that is a great start. But I do know that is very hard. when u said that u wanted to 'kick' the addiction indicates that u probably dont have a Dr. that perscribes u the actual RX, but u buy it off of ppl. If this is true, then it is VERY hard and most likely you will relapse. If you did have a doc, then it would be easier to just tell them and let them handle it from there. They r Doctors, and since he/she perscribed it to u then they know all of ur history  and y u needed them in the 1st place.... BUT like I said, It doesnt sound to me like u have a doc... If I was u I would evaluate all of my friends 1st. See which ones are going to fit n2 ur "sober" lifestyle and the ones that wouldn't. That is VERY important!!! U cannot be an addict, and hang around addicts for support. It just doesnt work. U r at a very fragile point right now, and u cant handle being around ppl like that. Now u have to ask ur self, when do u take zanx? Is it when ur with ur friend that also do it? when u drink? when ur depressed? and so on... when u answer those ?s with a yes, now u have to evulate how u will stop being around ppl. or what makes u feel depressed at that time for you to take it. U need to get out of the same daily routine and get a new one. Start working out! This is a great way to stay n shape and get ur self movated about life!! Have a new way to look at things! Stay focused! Now that u see that u r an addict keep away from negitive ppl and negitive energy. U can do this! U just have to keep ur eyes on the prize!!! And trust me when I say this, when u kick the habit for good IT WILL NOT BE PLESANT OR EASY, BUT IT IS WELL WORTH IT!! If u ever need help I am here for u. I have been down this road before...

you said xanax is nasty.  Well, for some people who use it and then have to withdrawal from it, yes it can be nasty especially if abused, but for people who have serious anxiety/panic attacks and use it properly it is a life saver,

To Famous42 definatly taper the dosage with a doctor's help or the panic could be horrible.  If u don't get it from a doc you can still taper.  Please listen to sweetiegirl1985  she knows what she is talking about.

Who you associate at this point is crucial.
