22 w Acne! What do i do?

by beka11, Dec 02, 2007 11:48PM
I'm 22 years old and i have had a problem with Acne since puberty.  I took Accutane when i was 16 and again at 18.  I haven't had any major problems since then until the past few months.  It is out of control.  I wake up with a new breakout atleast every day.  Some are so bad they hurt and my face is turning red where the breakouts occur.  At this point i'm not sure what to do. I use Proactiv and that doesn't seem to help much. I eat good and drink water constantly. At this point what are my other options? It's embarrassing. I feel like i'm 13 again!

hi Beka, don't panic i'm 31 and still get acne but there are lots of things you can do to control it. It is possible to take accutane a third time, i have taken it twice and may have to take it again. As accutane changes your skin it is also possible that some products which were ineffective before may now work for you such as oral antibiotics or topical lotions like Duac, Differin or Dalacin-T. Also if you are female take an anti-androgen contraceptive pill such as Dianette (called Diane35 in the States) or Yasmin. Love loiloi x

I agree with Loiloi, Yasmin is a good start. Your acne is hormonal, so nothing you put on the outside will make the major difference. If you are female, ask about spironolactone - it has a higher anti-androgenic affect than Yasmin, but the bc will help you all month. If you are male, then accutane and antibiotics are they way to go. Let us know.
