Accutane Dosage

by Redlocks767, May 19, 2008 08:25AM
Hi,

My son is on Accutane for 4 months now, going on 5.  He had moderate acne since he was 14 and he is now 19.  He weighs about 145 and is now taking 60 mg.  He is still breaking out not as bad though.  He wants to increase the dosage but doc said no last time because of back pain.  What does back pain indicate?  Would it be harmful to increase the dosage to 80mg.  What is a common and effective dosage?

Thanks,
Worried Mom

Hi. The most effective dose of accutane has been found to be between 0.5 and 1 x bodyweight in kilos per day for 16-24 weeks. Or, a total dose of between 120 and 150 x bodyweight in kilos. If a patient cannot tolerate the recommended dose they may take a lower dose for a longer time.
Side effects are largely dose related which is why the dermatologist is reluctant to increase the dose. Eloise x
