Acne Medication

Hello,
I am an 18 year old male, I had severe acne and went onto minocycline for about a year now. I can tell my face is quite a bit better, but not yet comfortable. I was wondering if tetrocycline would work. What is the difference and what would happen if I were on that? Do you have any other thoughts? Thank you! -Chad

Hi. There are various oral antibiotics which are effective for acne, including minocycline, doxycycline, oxytetracycline, lymecycline and erythromycin. Each has its own slightly different features and benefits such as whether it has to be taken once or twice a day, and whether it can be taken with food.
It is usually better to perserve with one antibiotic rather than switch to another one, except in the case of adverse reaction or relapse from clear skin.
Continue with your tablets and ask your doctor for a topical synthetic retinoid like Differin gel for use in conjunction with oral minocycline, to clear the remaining stubborn acne.
Eloise.
