Acne

I was wondering why sugar breaks me out? I started breaking out when I was about 12 and was told I would out grow it that it was normal. I am now 42 years old and I still breakout plus now I have fine lines too. I know its from sweets because I do not breakout any other time. If I eat lets say a plain piece of pound cake and haven't eaten anything sweet in a while sometimes I will not break out but if I have another piece later I will breakout but if I eat lets say a chocolate cake or candybar I will break out VERY VERY BAD! Lately I have been taking cough medicine and that has broke be out so bad I am too embrassed to go in public! For the longest time I didn't knew what it was so I started drinking diet coke about 25 years now and that helped a lot but is there anything I can do? Is it maybe a vitamin deficiency? I don't know anyone else who has gone through this.

There is a lack of medical evidence that any particular foods cause acne. Acne is caused by a sensitivity to the effects of androgens (male hormones found in male and female bodies). Androgens stimulate the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin. Bacteria on the skin feeds off excess oil, blocking the pores and resulting in acne spots.
you don't say which medications you have tried but there are 3 main ways to treat acne:
i) A topical gel such as Differin (adapalene) or Duac Gel (clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide)
ii) A course of oral antibiotics such as Oxytetracycline 250mg twice daily.
iii) If you are female; an anti-androgen called Spironolactone.
If your skin is reacting to a certain food this is an allergy, not acne.
Best Wishes, Eloise.
