Adult Acne, accutane, alopecia

Hello. I have still some problems with acne despite I am 50 years old. I am a man. My dermatologist adviced to start with accutane (isotretinoin). My worry is:  I've heard that this strong drug that can cause alopecia (even sometimes permanent after treatment). I have some hair loss, normal at my age, but I am scared this treatment can accelerate the normal process of hair loss. My question is: would you recommend to follow this treatment for adult acne or it can cause more trouble than advantages?
Many thanks for your response

Accutane has a whole litany of side effects.  Hair loss from it is considered to be rare.  My son took it for 3.5 months, he is 17, and he did not have any problems other than it induced insomnia and he had to take a sleeping aid.  His face is beautiful now.  So you need to weigh the pros and cons.  If your acne is bad and say for instance it is lowering your self-esteem, then it is worth a shot.  If you notice any of the side effects listed in the booklet, one that you have to sign, then you tell the dematologist and they will take you off of it right away.  Also, you will have to do monthly blood work.  It works well but they really, really stay on top of how it is affecting the person taking it.

I agree. Accutane has many side affects and if acne bothers you that bad, its all worth it. I have taken Accutane twice (I'm 27) and I had a lot of the more severe side affects including hair loss, but if I had to do it again I would! All that pain and feeling crappy was worth it. Most if not all side affects go away after your done with treatment.
