Allergic reaction to doxycycline?

by kate505, Apr 12, 2007 12:00AM
My dermatologist just prescribed me Doryx (Doxycycline) for my acne. However, about 6 months ago I was prescribed Minocycline by another doctor, and I had a bad reaction to it. About 3-4 weeks into my dosage, I developed severe hives and swelling at the joints, and I obviously stopped taking Minocycline. The ironic thing is that it was the only medication that has ever worked for my acne! My current dermatologist knows this, and after seeing no results with other medications she has prescribed the Doryx, and cautioned me to be careful and stop using it immediately if I notice symptoms of allergic reaction.

My question is: would it be a major mistake to even try taking the Doxycycline in the first place? If I'm allergic to one drug in the tetracycline family, am I allergic to all of them? I should probably get a professional's opinion on this, but for the moment, this is close as I can come to that. Please share any experiences or advice! thanks

i had a severe reaction to penicillin and i have very severe food and environmental allergies.  i was told that i shouldn't try any other drugs in the family of penicillin to be safe.  if i were you, i'd ask to be switched to an out-of-family medicine

To: dont take the doxycycline
i wouldnt take it, my mom is allergic and she found out by taking one pill,of doxy, she is also alergic (allergic) to pennicilin and tetracycline,  she took one pill and two days later had  third and fourth degree burns  and bruises all over her entire body. that was a very sever case, it has been over a year and she still has the bruise looking spots and she is scared all over her body for life , she could have died.
