At my wits end...help!

At my wits end...help!

Im a 37 yr old woman and have used proactiv with nothing but great results for 7 years. Then 6 months ago something started changing with my skin. i've never really had much problems with acne, until now. Iused the proactiv as a preventive measure. Six months ago my skin started looking like an oil slick. And I have a new bump pop up every day. It isnt just my face. It is my chest, face and upper arms. Im at a loss. I've tried everything and my skin just gets oiler. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be going on??

Hi. If products available to the public, like Proactive, result in failure or relapse you should see your doctor for a prescription strength gel like Differin (adapalene 0.1%). Use a bland soap-free cleanser whilst on this medication, to minimise the risk of irritation. Your doctor may also prescribe a course of oral antibiotics like Lymecycline or Oxytetracycline to kill acne-causing bacteria on the skin.
Female acne patients may also benefit from taking an anti-androgen contraceptive pill like Yasmin, Yaz or Diane35. The risks from taking the combined pill may be higher for women over 35, especially if they are overweight or a heavy smoker. If this applies to you, your doctor may prescribe a non-hormonal anti-androgen medicine called Spironolactone instead. Avoid the mini-pill, depo shot or hormonal IUD as these can make acne worse.  Your doctor may wish to check your hormone levels, to rule out an underlying reason for your acne, such as PCOS. Acne occurs when the patient has high androgen levels, or a particular sensitivity to the effects of androgens. Androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands in the skin. Bacteria on the skin feeds off this excess oil (sebum) blocking the pores and resulting in inflammed acne spots.
Best Wishes, Eloise.
