Benzoyl peroxide & pregnancy

I am 27 years old and 4 weeks pregnant and am suffering severe acne breakouts.  I have had acne since my teenage years and benzoyl peroxide has always worked great to control it, but since I found out I was pregnant I have used only a gentle facial cleanser.  The cleanser is doing nothing to improve my acne and so I was wondering if I could go back to using benzoyl peroxide.  I have done extensive research on using this topical medication in pregnancy, but have found mixed opinions on this.  Some websites claim it's safe to use in pregnancy while others say it's not safe.  Is benzoyl peroxide safe to use in pregnancy?

Although you will suffer breakouts at the start of pregnancy, because acne is hormonal your skin will get better as your pregnancy progresses and will probably be glowing in a few weeks. Companies will not say their products are safe for use in pregnancy in case they get sued. Small amounts of topical products are absorbed into the body and it is not known if these affect the baby. My son was born with birth defects-not due to acne treatments-but i would advise you not to take any risks during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Good luck love loiloi x
