Breaking out after starting birth control again

by Star2530, Oct 24, 2008 10:16PM
So ive been taking the same birth control for a few years now and have never had a problem with any side effects or anything.  A few months ago in the summer, I had to stop taking my pill because of problems with my insurance and I just couldnt afford it.  I didnt take it for like 2 or 3 months, and once the problem was fixed I started taking the same kind again and I'm on my second month of taking it.  Since I started taking it again, my face is breaking out really bad.  I have tiny bumps all over my cheeks and forehead and also on my chest.  I'm also getting many big red pimples.  I'll have 1 or 2 at a time and once those clear up, 2 more will pop up.  The thing is, I'm not sure if these breakouts are being caused by the fact that I stopped taking my pill then started again? Or if it's just coincidence and it's just stress causing these breakouts since I'm back to school now. Also, the water at my apartment at school tastes very bad, is there any chance of the weird water I wash my face with everyday causing problems? I never did have the most perfectly clear skin, but i also have never had these little red bumps on my cheeks or chest either.  Any ideas?

Hi. Which brand of birth control pills are you taking?
Combined pills are known to clear acne due to their oestrogen content. Useful brands for female patients with acne are Yasmin, Diane35 and Ortho Tri-cyclen. Avoid mini-pills (everyday pills) such as Femulen as these can induce acne.
If the tap water causes irritation, use a non-rinse cleanser you can remove with cotton wool.

Everyday pills (progestogen only) may be indicated for women who cannot use the combined pill because they are over 35, heavy smokers or overweight. However they can induce acne and changing to a combined pill (oestrogen and progestogen) will clear acne. Although you didn't experience this side effect when you took it before you it looks like you're experiencing it now so ask your doctor to change your prescription.
