Hi. There is a lack of medical evidence that diet effects acne. Acne occurs when androgens (male hormones found in male and female bodies) stimulate the sebaceous glands in the skin. Bacteria on the skin feeds off this excess oil, blocking the pores and leading to inflammed spots.
Proactive and other products available to the public are of limited benefit. See your doctor for a prescription strength acne gel such as Differin (adapalene) and/or a course of oral antibiotics such as Oxytetracycline or Erythromycin.
Female acne patients will also benefit from taking an anti-androgen contraceptive pill such as Diane35 or Yasmin. These block the actions of spot-causing hormones. Avoid the mini-pill, depo shot and hormonal IUD as these can make acne worse.
Best Wishes, Eloise.
