Can retinoids cause hair growth?

I am interested in starting on a prescription retinoid product, like Retin A or Retin A micro, but I read online that retinoids can cause facial hair growth. Is there any truth behind this? I would like to know because I've been breaking out a lot lately and the whole facial hair thing would just defeat the purpose!

Hi. Oral retinoids (containing isotretinoin) can cause a temporary loss of hair (alopecia) or rarely a temporary increase of hair (hirsutism). I use a topical retinoid-like gel called Differin (adapalene) and have not experienced any change to my hair.
Female acne patients usually respond well to taking an anti-androgen such as Spironolactone and/or a contraceptive pill containing oestrogen such as Diane35/Dianette. These also reduce facial hair.
Other options include a course of oral antibiotics such as Oxytetracycline, or topical antibiotics such as Clindamycin.
Retin-A can cause fragility of the skin so use a mild cleanser such as Cetaphil, Eucerin or La Roche-Posay. If irritation occurs apply Retin-A every other day until you can tolerate daily usage.
Eloise.
