The usual dose of Accutane is between 0.5 and 1 mg per day x kg patient bodyweight.
For example, if the patient weighs 50kg he would take between 25mg and 50mg per day, depending on the severity of his acne. This should be taken for 16 to 24 weeks, depending on how quickly the acne responds to treatment.
Use a bland cleanser and moisturiser such as Vichy or La Roche-Posay, as skin may become fragilised on this drug. Use Vaseline or Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream on lips which will become dry.
You don't say if you are male or female, but female Accutane patients must use 2 forms of birth control (pill plus condom) whilst on the drug and for 5 weeks afterwards. This is because even tiny amounts of Isotretinoin can seriously harm an unborn baby. Male Accutane patients do not need to use extra precautions since their sperm will not contain harmful levels of Isotretinoin.
Accutane patients should have their cholesterol and liver function tested regularly.
Eloise.
