Does Benzoyl Peroxide (Proactiv) Cause Brown Spots?

So I've been hearing that Benzoyl Peroxide acne treatments can cause or increase the life of brown spots left by acne (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation). I also heard it causes a thing called free radicals (?). Anyway I've been on Proactiv for years and I've had mild to severe hyperpigmentation problems for years but every time I try to switch off Proactiv my acne gets sooo much worst (I look diseased). Right now I have zero acne because of Proactiv and the pill and creams the dermatologist gave me but my hyperpigmentation (i have a lot of it) takes forever to go away (anywhere from 3 to 6 to 12 months!) Could the benzoyl perozide be causing this? Do you have any personal experiences or professional opinions? BTW DON'T EVER GET HOOKED ON PROACTIV. It works.. but it also costs a lot for a small bottle and they'll secretly charge you for more unknown or non existent purchases (that's why you can ONLY pay with a credit card) and once you get hooked on the stuff you can't get off it without looking like a leper. Also.. it's been known to suddenly stop working as well after you've been using it for years. It's too later 4 me but you can be better!
