Hi.
Skip the moisturiser -this is not essential for acneic skin and can block the pores making acne worse. If topical acne meds (such as benzoyl peroxide) cause drying apply an oil-free moisturiser only to dry areas.
If over-the-counter meds such as benzoyl peroxide are of limited benefit, see your doctor for a course of oral antibiotics such as Oxytetracycline 250mg twice daily. Female acne patients will also benefit from taking the combined oral contraceptive pill (such as Yasmin, Yaz or Diane35) since these block the effects of acne-causing male hormones on the skin. Avoid the mini-pill, depot shot and hormonal IUD as these can make acne worse.
Unfortunately, drinking water and having a healthy diet is not enough to clear acne. Androgens (male hormones found in male and female bodies) stimulate the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin. Bacteria on the skin feeds off this sebum (oil) blocking the pores and leading to acne. The best way to treat acne is therefore through oral antibiotics and/or anti-androgen hormones such as oestrogen or cyproterone actetate.
Eloise.
