Over-the-counter AND Prescription medication?

by PianoPlayer08, Aug 23, 2009 10:59PM
So after battling acne for years, and using many commercial acne treatments that didn't work, I finally decided to get prescription medication. I'm currently using a topical gel that has been working pretty well. At the same time...I tend to have oily skin when I don't wash my face, so I like washing my face using a face wash scrub. I also realize that a lot of the face wash scrubs contain salicylic acid which is an active ingredient in acne treatment. I'm concerned because I don't know if using both, the face scrub with salicylic acid and the prescription medication, will cause a negative reaction, prevent my acne from healing, or even heal my acne faster (in which case I'd be much happier). Can anyone tell me what I should do, please? Thanks!

P.S. The active ingredient in the prescribed medication is erythromycin.

Hi. You're right, concurrent use of topical Erythromycin and salicylic acid may result in fragility of the skin. I use Sparkling Clean cleanser by Estee Lauder which controls oily skin without over-stripping. I use this in conjunction with my prescription acne gel (Differin) without irritation.
Occassionally, my skin becomes overly dry in the areas I apply Differin. I then use a cleanser by La Rcohe Posay, either Physiological cleanser or Effaclar H.
Eloise.
