Redness & Whiteheads around Lip

I have a redness above my lip only on the left side that has since started spreading more around my mouth with more irritation.  Whiteheads appear and I have learned to stop touching it (as it creates more whiteheads) except when I am trying to wash the area.  The redness subsides some when I stop irritating the area, but is still more red than the other side.  I tend to pop and drain the whiteheads, clean the area and apply vaseline lotion, which slows down the creation of whiteheads but the end up developing anyways later in the day.  I try to apply lotion and/or moisturizer throughout the day to prevent dryness.  How do I stop the whiteheads from developing and the redness to go away?
