Roaccutane and Periods in Women

Hi,

I really need your help. I have had acne since last 12 years. I started Roaccutane about a 1.5 months ago. My last periods came in a regular time. But I have missed my next period. I am really worried. My doctor says it has nothing to do with it. Just to clarify I am taking 20mg twice a day.

Can you please let me know if that is common and if it is will I have any issues once I stop roaccutane and wish to plan a child?

Hi. Roaccutane can cause menstrual irregularities in some women.
It is necessary to use two forms of birth control (combined pill and condom) whilst on Roaccutane and for 5 weeks afterwards as 90% of exposed pregnancies are malformed. Doctors usually ask you to take the combined birth control pill whilst on Roaccutane even if you are not currently sexually active. Taking a combined or anti-androgen birth control pill will also help heal your acne. By taking the pill you will regulate your periods and avoid the risk of pregnancy.
Once you have been off Roaccutane for 5 weeks or more you can try to conceive as the medication will no longer be in your body. Roaccutane is not known to cause any fertility problems.
Eloise.
