Scrubs and Acne

My teenage daughter uses a scrub on a daily basis... should she avoid using it when she has an ance breakout?

Hi. Exfoliation is important in the prevention of acne. How often a scrub should be used depends on the type of scrub. Most are intended to be used less often, but Clarins make a cleanser and exfoliator in one, with orange extract, which can be used daily.
If your daughter's acne persists see your doctor for a course of oral antibiotics such as Erythromycin or Oxytetracycline.
Acne at this age is often hormonal in cause. If your daughter has started her periods, talk to your doctor about a birth control pill such as Yasmin or Diane35 (also called Dianette). These will regulate her hormones and prevent acne. They also make periods more regular, lighter and almost always painless.
If your daughter is prescribed a topical acne lotion such as Differin, she should not use scrubs as well. Differin will exfoliate the skin and use of a scrub will increase the chances of irritation. When used correctly, Differin is very effective and well tolerated.
Best Wishes, Eloise.
