Solodyn now Bactrim ?!?!

by kdricha, Oct 13, 2008 02:47PM
A few years ago I had a horrible case of acne and was put on the Doryx pill for 3 weeks, wash with Brevoxyl 2x day, morning Tazorac topical and evening Duac topical. This combination cleared up all of my acne and dark spots in a month !!! So after two months I weened myself off of the topicals. Everything was fine.

About 2 years later, I had another bad breakout. I have really oily skin, lots of white and blackheads and acne scarring (dark spots) resulted from these pimples. I was prescribed the same treatment that had worked so well before (minus the Doryx)  but of course it didnt work one bit this time.

I was then prescribed Differin and Finacea..no results
Abt two months ago, I was prescribed Solodyn, I use neutrogena creamy wash, Retin-A and some hydroquinone for the dark spots. The solodyn make me break out in a HEAP of HIVES !! so I stopped taking it about 3 weeks ago and now I have been prescribe Bactrim?

It seems that antibiotics are the ONLY thing that cure my acne since I have really oily skin. The topicals dry it out in the beginning, and I only apply a little, but then my sebaceous glands quickly make up for the lack of oil. I always keep it well moisturized with noncomedogenic lotion but by noon I look like a grease monkey :-(

Any help would be great !!!!   Thanks

Topical gels such as Differin and Duac are more effective when used in conjunction with oral antibiotics. A 12 weeks course of both antibiotics and a topical lotion should clear your acne.
Are you female? (Sorry cannot tell from your post). If so speak to your doctor about taking an anti-androgen pill like Diane35. Acne forms when androgens (male hormones found in both male and female bodies) stimulate the sebaceous glands. Diane35 blocks the action of androgens, so skin is less greasy and acne cannot form.

My daughter developed drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis after taking Solodyn for her acne.  After a liver biopsy and a nine month course of prednisone she is much better and, hopefully, the autoimmune hepatitis has reversed.

What did finally work for her is IPL (intense pulsed light) laser treatments.  She had the treatments in May and her face is still, for the most part, clear of acne.  And, it is drug free!  If only we had known about the laser treatments before she became acutely ill from the Solodyn.
