Squeezed pimple, now eye is puffy

Hi, I've had a small pimple (or something) below my eye for probably a week or two. No head to it, just a tiny but noticeable bump beneath my skin. It never really did anything, and I made the mistake of squeezing it last night. I woke up with the area around it all puffy. The bump itself is hard, and slightly painful to the touch, in part because it feels like it's right against the bone of my eye socket. The skin around it is kinda red, but not itself sore when I touch it lightly, avoiding the bump, and there is no itchiness.

It's been about 12 hours since I woke up and it doesn't appear to have swollen further or shrunk. Any ideas on what it could be?

Sounds more like milia, tiny cysts that form in odd areas that you wouldn't normally see breakouts. Most see them under the eye area. They resemble pimples but are harder to the touch and tend to linger longer. They are formed because of similar reasons though, usually trapped dirt under your skin cells. It is simply the result from lack of cleansing in that particular area.
Usually the best thing to do is gently (and I repeat, GENTLY) exfoliate that area, and then apply a calming gel like aloe vera. But since you've already poked it, try gently washing the area with warm water to open your pores, and if it is still swollen, apply an ice pack to reduce the size and redness right after. Then leave it be. It should disappear within a day or two.
