Starting and stopping Accutane?

by KALEB1994, Jul 03, 2009 01:28PM
I am gettting ready to start a round of Accutane.  I believe it is 10mg TID that I will take.  I took Accutane at that dose for 3-4 months and then had to move. With the changing of docs and the pharmacy's not having it or not having enough was enough to stop me from finishing the course.  I finally was able to get in w/ my Derm. he wanted to take another route and I went through a whole bucket of creams, tonics and pills and finally I am getting ready to finish the course of accutane.

My question is: Does it really work like that?  I can take Accutane for 3 months and then stop for 7 months and then start back up again?  That would be nice, but is it true- it is an accumulated drug that stays in your system for this long?  Or in your opinion would it be better to start the whole course again?  Thank you for your help, Kaleb

Hi. Accutane stays in your body for up to 5 weeks, so a short break in your treatment will not be detrimental. However, after 7 months this will be considered as a second course of Accutane rather than a continuation of the first course. You will therefore need to take your medicine for the full time recommended time (16-24 weeks).

my suggestion to you is to ask your doctor if you can complete your treatments all at once and so that you won't have to take accutane again and be free of it. finish taking it till you're completely clear and even an extra month to make sure no more breakouts.
