My dermatologist Dr. Dana Grenier in Pasadena recommended the low-dose accutane. I don't know if she's accepting new patients, but you can try her :) Regular doses of accutane have done WONDERS for me short term, but never last more than 9 months after I stop taking it. I'm hoping the low-dose will work for me - I go to Dr. Grenier tomorrow to learn more :) Her number is 626-449-4207
Hi. You're right, most dermatologists follow the usual guidelines of prescribing Accutane at 0.5 - 1mg/ kg patients bodyweight per day for 16 to 24 weeks. In 80% of cases this results in a long term remission from acne, with 20% of patients needing a second course.
Although side effects are generally dose related, a lower dose than detailed above will result in a longer therapy time and a greater risk of relapse.
As even small amounts of Isotretinoin can harm an unborn baby, dermatologists are unlikely to prescribe a long term low dose course to a woman capable of child-bearing.
Accutane is sometimes prescribed at a low dose for Rosacea, but this is an off-label indication. The makers of Accutane do not recommend using this product for a long time, and it is not licenced to be used in this way.
Eloise.
