acne and oily skin

by peter76, Jul 18, 2008 05:20PM
Hello.

This might sound strange, but after testing myself for some time I can say, that ejaculation makes my skin oily and causes acne. After 4 days the skin gets back to normal (I've been testing this for several months and the results are always the same). I've read that the two things are not related, but my skin says opposite. I am 29 years old and have acne problem on my back, shoulders and neck, fortunately not so much on the face. My parents and brother haven't had problems with acne.

Why is it that medical research claims that ejaculation doesn't cause acne? Perhaps it is such a rare condition, that nobody knows about it? I'm not entirely sure. I would really like to hear your opinion regarding this matter. I am pretty sure it has to do something with hormones.

I've tried several diets, but it seems food is not the cause.

I am desperate, because I want to have normal sexual life. I would also like to hear your opinion on Roaccutane.

Thank you.

Hi. There is no evidence that masturbation or sex causes acne. A change of diet seldom results in reduction of acne either. Acne is caused by a sensitivity to androgens (male hormones) in our bodies. Androgens cause skin to become greasy leading to spots.
Roaccutane is considered the "gold star" treatment for acne as it results in a long term remission after one course for 80% of patients. However, due to the numerous potential side effects it is reserved for those who's severe acne has persisted after other treatments have been given a fair trial.
Oral antibiotics such as Oxytetracycline or Lymecycline are effective at clearing acne. Topical synthetic retinoids such as Differin are also helpful. Discuss this with your doctor who will prescribe one to suit you.

Thank you for the answer. I would like to ask you if is the level of androgens after sex or masturbation higher? Bacause, if it is, it would make sense (from the amater point of view). Is it possible to treat the sensitivity to androgens in our bodies? If I've understood correct, Roacctuante and Differin only cure the consequence and the the cause?

Best regards.

Unfortunately, only female patients can take anti-androgen medication for acne.
You may require repeat courses of oral antibiotics or topical retinoids (Differin) for as long as you are prone to acne.
Roaccutane works differently. It is taken for 16-24 weeks and this, in 80% of cases, results in a long term remission from acne. It works by shrinking the sebaceous glands so they cannot produce excess oil and cause acne. The glands return to their previous size very slowly so the patient is free from acne indefinately.
I have taken Roaccutane twice if you would like to talk about it (20% of patients require a second or third course). But, as I said, doctors will not usually prescribe Roaccutane unless you have tried long term oral antibiotics first and your acne has not responded.
