breakouts

Im 34 years old.  Im hypothyroid.   In the last 3 months my chin, under my chin and on my neck i have been breaking out with whitehead big pimples that hurt, sometimes itch.  I wash my face and they break open and bleed.  Im wondering why tthis is happening and only on these areas.   If hormonal, what could I do?

Hi. Hormonal acne often occurs on the chin. It responds well to a course of Diane35 (cyproterone acetate and ethinylestradiol) and Oxytetracycline.
Androgens (male hormones) stimulate the sebaceous (oil) glands. If you have high levels of androgens or are particularly sensitive to their effects your glands may produce too much oil. The glands then get blocked with excess oil and bacteria which feeds off oil, and infected acne spots occur.
Diane35 will block the action of androgens on the skin and oxytetracycline will kill the acne-causing bacteria. If your doctor agrees you warrant both these medicines concurrently, use a barrier method of contraception as tetracyclines may reduce the contraceptive effectiveness of Diane35. Both these medicines are contra-indicated in pregnancy.
