Hi. 90% of people with HIV develop skin changes. The spectrum of skin changes is quite wide, with some patients reporting an itchy rash while others do not. Skin diseases can warn of progression of the virus, since skin diseases are more likely to occur as the white blood cell (CD4) count decreases.
However, skin complaints are very common and may have nothing to do with HIV. Itchy skin can be a sign of a condition such as allergic contact dermatitis for which an oral antihistamine and topical steriod cream is indicated. If a rash is accompanied by swelling of the tongue or fingers or difficulty breathing seek medical attention, allergies can be dangerous.
If you have put yourself at risk of contracting HIV abstain from sexual activity and sharing needles and get tested quickly. Early detection and treatment of the virus will greatly improve your future health.
Eloise.
