is my accutane dosage appropriate

is my accutane dosage appropriate

Hi, i am 19 years old and i have been suffering mild cystic acne on only my back and neck for about 3 years now and have tried alternatives like tetracycline that never worked for me,  i have never had worse than mild acne on my face so i went to the doctor and he prescribed me accutane because i have quite some scarring on my neck from these cysts.  He prescribed me 80 mg to take every morning, i took this dose for about 15 days then started to notice mild blister like rashes on my forearms and some eczema on the front of my neck but where i dont get cysts, i went to a different doctor since i couldnt get in with my original doctor who prescribed the drug for a couple weeks....so he told me to drop my dose down to 40 mg a day (i weigh 155 pounds by the way, but most of my weight is muscle considering natural bodybuilding is one of my greatest hobbies) anyways my rash is almost completely cleared up and i barely even have gotten chapped lips because i started moisturising my lips constantly before the dryness came so i havent experienced the dry lips at all yet.  My main question is if this dose is right for me (40mg),  i barely suffer from acne vulgaris its just deeps cysts all around my neck and back that are leaving serious scars and this isnt genetic and it is very hard to deal with since they are on the turning parts of my neck so its almost constant irratation when they are inflamed.  Do you think this dose of accutane will solve my problem?  and by the way i naturally would weigh about 125 pounds if i didnt start bodybuilding, im also very lean in mass.  Thanks alot i will well apreciate your answer.

Hi. Accutane dosage is based on both weight and severity of acne. It may be raised if your acne doesn't respond or lowered if side effects become intolerable.
The usual starting dose is 0.5mg X kg patients bodyweight per day, raised if necessary to 1mg X kg patients bodyweight per day.
155lbs is 70kg, so your dose should be between 35mg and 70mg per day. This should be taken in divided doses, so someone on 80mg should take 40mg with breakfast and 40mg with their evening meal.
To avoid rashes use a bland cleanser and moisturiser such as Cetaphil or La Roche-Posay. I recommend Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream for dry lips.
Accutane is the most powerful acne treatment available. It works by shrinking the sebaceous glands responsible for oil production. These grow back very slowly, by which time the patient has nearly always outgrown their tendancy for acne. 80% of patients remain free from acne indefinately, after just one course lasting 16 to 24 weeks. 20% warrant a second or third course.
Accutane can cause joint or muscle pain in some patients, discuss with your doctor if this makes bodybuilding difficult. You should avoid steroids and testosterone based medicines sometimes used by athletes, as these can make acne worse.
Best Wishes, Eloise.
