Am I an addict

I used to drink everyday now I drink occasionally but when I do I drink excessively. Am I an alcoholic

I am not expert or anything but same problem we have with our son. He is binge drinker and drink excessively to pass out. After he becomes functionless. He ends up in hospitals due to excessive drinking. He does not drink everyday when drink no control over alcohol. After drinking he gets depressed or say cravings. Doctors saying he is alcoholic. Now he is not drinking at all. Almost 8 months he is sober.
