88 yr old w/constipation

Hello. My mom is 88 and we live together. She was taking vicodin for a painful shoulder and was constipated originally for a few days. We used a gentle stool softener and that cleared up after 2 days. She has now been constipated again for 4 days.... she had a bad experience with exlax where it worked too well and too often, but should i try something stronger? i don't want to wait and have more problems. please let me know any ideas.
