Atkins Diet

by liscamdave, Jul 24, 2007 11:23AM
Ok, so I know this is not an appropriate question, and I hope that I dont get **** for it, but here goes...

As I have said, I have been gaining a massive amount of weight, about 20lbs in the past 2 months, since I started my detox to be exact. Others lose weight, and I am gaining, go figure. Im about 5'4 and a 1/2...lol..and used to weigh 120lbs...I am now like 136-140, that fluctuates....I am going to Key West in three weeks and am by no means in bathing suit shape. Does anyone know if the atkins diet works for a temporary fix. I plan on joining the gym and eating better, but for an immediate result, has anyone ever done it or know how I can lose some weight in a few weeks? Anyones suggestions will suffice....HELP...lol.../

Hi dear.  I haven't talked to you in a while.  I teach nutrition and food safety for our county extension office so I will try to answer some of your questions.  There's a lot of advocates of the Atkins diet, but it is not at all healthful.  Maybe on a short time basis you would have luck with it, but as soon as you started adding carbs back to your diet you would gain the weight back.  Really the best way to lose is the tried and true: eat less and exercise more.  And watch what you eat.  I am 5'3" and I got a little porky myself (before I went thru withdrawals from the oxys.)  Eat fresh fruit and veggies, cereal with lots of fiber, skim milk, and no white food.  Eat brown rice, whole wheat bread, etc.  And stay away from the sweets.  I am addicted to sugar myself so I can't even buy ice cream or twinkies or anything like that.  If I get a pie, I will eat the whole pie.  Another thing, don't eat anything after dinner.  And put your dinner portions on a small plate.  When you've cleaned your plate, stop eating.  You will feel full in about 20 minutes.  Gosh I have a lot of tips.  I'll email you later.  Good luck in your quest.  You are going to have a blast in Key West!
Love,
Yoda

Aww...honey,,, how are you. I am so happy to see and hear from you. I haven't really had to much time to post and or email everyone, but I should have some more time, very soon.....How is everything...

Thanks for the help. I do plan on changing my diet, I have never worried about my weight before, but it seems like it just all came from no where. I am not eating more than usual, just getting old I guess. I have to start excersizing...like soon. I want to join a gym, but have to find the time. I guess walking will help too. We'll see how it goes. I just have to do something and I just found out about key west, and it is august 10, so not much time to lost weight...lol....

Atkins takes awhile to work from what I understand... when my hubby wanted to shed a few b4 our wedding he did "The Master Cleanse" and had great results... It even got him to quit smoking.. Its is supposed to help with cravings from food and cigarettes etc.. google it the New York Times did a good article on it last year its probably still in the archives on the web site.

When I was searching for help with getting my liver helathy I read that the Atkins diet can actually compromise or hurt your liver more because it taxes it to break down all that protein.
I've always believed in a more balanced approach.  "The liver cleansing diet" book by Sandra Cabot actually made me lose 20 lbs in a month.

Hey girl, maybe you will read this tomorrow, I am a little late getting around.  I just wanted to tell you that I have done the Atkins diet faithfully at least twice years ago, and while I did lose weight, I really got run down and just did not feel well by the time I had reached my goal weight.  Of course, those were the days when I just needed to lose maybe 5-10 pounds, not at my current situation which is at least 100 pounds over.  The diet may have been revised many times since then, but I do remember that I felt so bad after I had been on it a couple weeks or so.  It just must not be very nutritious.
