Hard night...

Well, I guess that those in the 12 step programs might understand this more..but, I thought I'd post it to show that recovery is ongoing for everyone. Tonight, I had to do something very difficult. I fired my sponsor. He's an older gentleman that has sponsored me since my first days in AA/NA. He's an AA diehard and has been clean for 34 years. To make a long story short, I just didn't relate to him. I've never been a heavy drinker (drunk maybe 5 times in my life), and he was a drinker back in the days of bootleggers. My DOC's were prescription pills, and he didn't relate to me, either. I felt my recovery stagnating and coming to a slow grinding stop. So, I fired him and got a new sponsor from an NA program that I think I will relate to more. Anyway, I just wanted to show that even when you get a few months clean, the struggles are still out there. Thankfully, I realized it was happening before my addiction talked me back into using. Recovery is truly a selfish act. But, I'm no good to anyone if I'm using....

wow  what a brave step   and good for you that you had the courage and commitment to follow thru with what was best for you.  Gosh I do not see your actions being of weakness or being rude , rather one of having the strength to do the absolute best for your program, and that is having a sponsor you can relate to.........     I can't imagine it was easy to tell him that you needed more, however you put your sincerity and sobriety first and foremost.   I have the utmost respect for your honesty.    Also  so very grateful you are sharing this story  as it does  take (for some) many meetings to find your home group,   a few sponsors to find that right fit,   you didn't give up  and I applaud you,

Thanks LateAugust. I fully plan to keep my former sponsor in my program, but I think he sensed that he wasn't helping me the way I needed as well. But, I admit, he had become like a Grandfather to me. I'll always be grateful to him for what he's done..and it just hurt to tell him. But, he understood and was happy for me.Sometimes that rigorous honesty thing ***** :)

i can relate to this too, its not important for me to have a sponsor just like me, but i do want one who has worked the steps in both programs
i am glad you did this, it was so hard for me to change sponsors, i was comfortable with the lady i had and did not want to move on, eventually i moved cross country and had to find someone new, it all worked out
