Have you ever switched addictions?

It feels good to get back on here the past few days and this site has always given me strength. For those of you that remember me here, you know i battled a major cocaine addiction that almost cost me my life, but I used many drugs over the years. I am an addict and addicted to ALL drugs, I accept that:(. I got some tough love on here lately and I am so glad that it was not sugarcoated, that does not always help me. I stopped drinking this week and see things a lot clearer, although i only drank for a short time, alcohol and drugs cloud us of what we really want in life. I hope ya'll dont think I am a hypocryte for coming back and wanting to help again, i guess i just have self guilt for drinking the past couple weeks and there are NO excuses.

Ok enough rambling, I just wanted to know about your addictions? Although most of us have our DOC, many of us have switched drugs for a short time, only to find we are addicted to that too. Have you switched addictions in your life? Did you find out fast that you were addicted to that too?

One year ago I weighed abt. 94 lbs.,  was going to a "Pain Specialist Doctor" and getting so tired of being 5'5" and 94lbs.   Nothing fit,  if it fit in lenght then it was too wide lol.........   Today,  I am still 5'5" tall but weigh 117 lbs  :))))   Guess I am addicted to food now,  cause I enjoy eating,  where as before , I did it to survive.  Pain pills were my food and they weren't making me fat !!!  I fill out my bras now and even my size 4 jeans/shorts.   Now,  I am not bragging,  just be happy for me cause I have never weighed this much in my life, and my life is darn near over(lol)  my husband can't believe I am this big still amazes him.  Now,  if I could just find a cure for "old" then this ole gal would truly be happy.

I never drank, but I do smoke my cigs and no, I won't give 'em up.  I smoked before my addiction to opiates and I have no other joys in life, and until we are ready,   we don't give up noth'n do we ???
Best wishes to all ( esp. those who don't judge me too badly) lol

Just adding my input also... I switched a lot when I was using. After my OD, when I realized things had gotten too far I was trying to cool down. This I naturally did by switching to more relaxing drugs. Luckily I noticed early that I just had switched. 6 months after I quitted everything in a really dramatic way (long story). I am still an addict I guess. After I stopped using I asked my father: "How did I spend my time before I started drugs? I can't remember...". He said: "You were reading books and sitting in front of the computer all day long." So once again I am back to my old addiction, and have been for two years :P

What up dude? Long time.  I guess to add my in put- I just do most things to extreme . ( coffee-very strong, gym- lift more and longer than I should, ect..)
It`s either go all the way or stay home. I think that is why ct was the only way to quit for me.
Again glad to see you    Late   Brrrrad

Great to see you here my Northern friend!!  I tried to answer this question a while back and was stumped. I am absolutely certain there was something besides PCP (phencyclidine) that I didnt have a run in with .......maybe it was amyl nitrate? I KNOW there was something else. As for all the rest - - I bet I can name some that you have never even heard of. I did all that crazy stuff like peyote with the apaches and mushrooms in the mountains of Mexico - - and a close friend that is a shrink right now had a great lab at NorthWestern University .......Better living through chemistry wasnt just DuPonts idea........

I never really did it but I can see how it happens. When I first stopped, i went down to the pub once a week for a month or two and would put a number of ales under my belt.

It was a form of stress relief for me. I stopped doing it though as it turns out drinking at the pub is rather expensive (5 dollars an ale, I have expensive tastes). :-/

Luckily I don't care to drink alcohol at home, so it never went beyond that.

Thanks ladies! It's so easy to fall back into old patterns as an addict.

Weird that although ive used various pills every now and then too, they were the one thing that never seemed to get me, i always liked to be wired instead, lol. Thanks for the feedback, I learned again, but I knew this anyway. I just stopped getting support for a short time and that is deadly for me. Im fine now:) I am heading to the U.S soon too, had to put that back a bit, cause of all that's happened lately. All is good now though and my couple weeks of drinking is over. Stupid of me tho, very stupid

Hey gizzy.. this would be better suited for the addiction side as you would garner more support...  I was the queen of trading addictions.. I went about it a lil backwards.. heroin crank alcohol then pills.. I lost much behind each one but the alcohol.. was the most damaging and embarrassing and a hard one to escape as it is accepted till we pee our selves lol I'm glad you caught this early.. I agree with the above. the 2nd will be 9 months clean for me and this will be the longest in a very very long time.. I picked up photography and found it to give me a better feeling then drugs.. no hangover.. cheap and I smell pretty lol I also get out more.. I know golf is a passion and they have clubs where the members hang out.. my sister does not drink but all her biker buddies hang out in bars.. she has oj with a cherry and they all think she is having a drink.. non alcoholic beer is a option.. a friend of mine switched to this as he liked the taste.. I'm happy you posted I know it is not easy :)and very glad you caught it early.. You are just to great of a guy to sell out your life to the bottle.. love with hugs.. lesa

I believe that many addicts have addictive personalities. Meaning that if you find something you like, you're gonna wanna do it again and again. In my personal experience, if one is addicted to drugs and becomes sober, it is very hard for them to have a drink without it eventually leading back to drugs or getting out of control.

It is a smart idea to find something healthy that you can become "addicted" to, like exercising. I think everyone is addicted to things in life, some are healthier than others, it just depends on what makes us feel good. Try to find an activity or group you would like to join and make that your focus.

You almost have to switch addictions it seems! You have to replace the 1st with something else. I've been smart and switched to something like exercise, and I've been dumb and switched pills for wine! I'm back to exercise now, though!
