ADDICTION: SOCIAL COMMUNITY
Music that helps?

Music that helps?

So I just took 15 mins to feel the wonderful sun (mid 70's here in Nor. CA) and had the ipod on. Two songs came on that inspired me and felt like it was speaking about my addiction.  Anyone have any other song suggestions?  i would like to reward my staying clean today with a new song to the collection : )

Ben Kweller - This is War (this whole album is great. You can listing on Youtube or go buy it!  THIS (ADDICTION) IS WAR!!)

I'm a soldier on the battlefield
Got an army on the battlefield
outnumebered like at alamo
I don't even wanna go

this is war yeah yeah yeah this is war
this is war yeah yeah yeah this is war

I'm always stuck up on a daydream
I can't focus on the other team
i haunted you day and night
now i'm ready for a fight

this is war yeah yeah yeah this is war
this is war yeah yeah yeah this is war
I can't be your friend
cause i got to knock you out

Are you ready for a surprise
I don't think you even realise
They say that you're the best
you gonna fall with the rest

this is war yeah yeah yeah this is war

I can't be your friend
cause i got to knock you out
so i can win

Matchbox 20 - These Hard Times
(this is about a relationship/girl, but the lyrics still speak to me - espec. the chorus)

...Say goodbye, these days are gone
and we can't keep holding on
When all we need is some relief
Through these hard times
(whoa) There's something missing
(Oh whoa) You'll never feel it but you
(Oh whoa) You're gonna feel it when it's gone
When it's gone

Say goodbye, these days are gone
and we can't keep holding on
When all we need is some relief
Through these hard times
(hey) these Hard times
(oh no now) Hard times
Hard times

Say goodbye, these days are gone
Say goodbye, these days are gone
These days are gone

Creed - sizx feet from the edge
3 doors down - here without you
Nickelback - rockstar
Creed - higher
Creed - arms wide open
3 doors down - when I'm gone
3 doors down - be like that

Those are some from a playlist I have that I really enjoy and I am listening too right now.

Somewhere in this darkness there's a light that I can't find, maybe its too far away or maybe I'm just blind- When I'm gone I really like that verse.  The light of sobriety.

Since you posted lyrics, hope people don't mind if I do as well. I listen to this song to keep a little motivation:

Until the End

So clever
whatever
I'm done with these endevours
alone I walk the winding way
(here I stay)

It's over
no longer
I feel it growing stronger
I live to die another day
until I fade away

why give up?
why give in?
it's not enough
it never is
So I will go on until the end

We've become desolate
It's not enough
it never is
But I will go on until the end

Surround me
It's easy
to fall apart completely
I feel you creeping up again
(in my head)

it's over
no longer
I feel it growing colder
I knew this day would come to end
so let this life begin

why give up?
why give in?
it's not enough
it never is
So I will go on until the end

We've become desolate
It's not enough
it never is
But I will go on until the end

I've lost my way
I've lost my way
but I will go on until the end

Living is hard enough
we fell too far
******* up

why give up?
why give in?
it's not enough
it never is
So I will go on until the end

I've lost my way
I've lost my way
but I will go on until the end

the final fight I win
the final fight I win
the final fight I win
but I will go on until the end

I have been lurking for a loooong time.  I struggle with the same issues most of you do in regards to addiction.  I felt compelled to jump in on this thread because one band and one musician have helped me overcome this major hurdle in my life.

Mike mentioned Pantera.  In 1995, lead singer Phil Anselmo joined his friends from New Orleans to form a side project called DOWN.  Phil and the drummer, Jimmy Bower, have spoken of their various addictions.  Phil was addicted to just about everything including heroin.  He had a serious back injury which led him down the pharmaceutical path and he was wasted on methadone and soma for many years.  It is surprising he did not die.  This man knows the evils of opiates.  Anyway....within the last two years he has cleaned himself up completely.  He had a very major back surgery and weaned himself off all pills.  By himself with the help of Jimmy Bower and other addicted friends.  It is remarkable to me as  they accomplished this through sheer will.  They recorded and released their third album called "Over The Under" in September of 2007.  Phil has been my inspiration in cleaning up my act.  Every track on the cd speaks truth about himself, his addiction, what his addiction led to etc etc.

Here are the lyrics to just one awesome track off the album.  Those of us with a pill addiction can certainly relate and I would recommend this CD to anyone wishing to dig deep within themselves and see what the lyrics mean to them.

Pillamyd

Been to this place before
An excavation
Scrawling a name again
Touch stony face restored
Can't read the name
Collapsible fingertips

Weeping within the hot of desert weeps
To brood inside the skull of
Wax and time
Taking no step alone until you can
Crying on the downed stones

(Pillamyd)
By handfuls you will build a pillamyd
(Pillamyd)

Lust in the vessel head
Working with slaves
Dust in the eyes of men
Offer nocturnal prayer
Alter a blaze
Magic obtained
Deciphering pain

Moving inside you when you seem asleep
Influence all to step beyond the gate
When you're slipping in preservative
Hydro-glyphic downed stones

(Pillamyd)
By handfuls you will build a pillamyd
(Pillamyd)
A pillamyd built
The pillamyd guilt...inside

It's etched in stone

(Pillamyd)
By handfuls you will build a pillamyd
(Pillamyd)

There are really some heartfelt moments on this CD regarding addiction.  If you are interested check them out and listen to "Beneath The Tides", "Never Try"...also their two previous CD's hold many memorable lyrics that many can relate to.

When I was doing c/t and I felt like I was dying, Simon & Garfunkle's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" came on the radio while I was driving and I had to pull over cuz the song hit me so hard. It was like God was speaking directly to me through the song and I cannot begin to tell you the relief and comfort that washed over me. It was amazing.

Beneath The Tides

Setting sail
From a crushed rooftop
Fathoms deep
Shallow as a raindrop
Attempt to feel
20/20 now
React like gasoline
Cornered by a house fire

You can't come clean beneath the tides of the washout
Beneath the tides of the washout

Cut from the filthy cloth
A sucking wound left
In our chest
Being burned around the heart
The boil under your flesh
Hidden at home
Chasing a tucked tail now
Acting on the instinct
Of self haphazard yet

You can't come clean beneath the tides of the washout
Beneath the tides of the washout

The shaving down
In milligrams
With a gun in your hand
Directionless
Memories
Of combat on your head
Rain can't soak what is not there...

The first thrill
Demands another
Consequence
The trigger of the operative
Playing Russian roulette with a full chamber
Miserable out come
One and the same

You can't come clean beneath the tides of the washout
Beneath the tides of the washout

My Own Prison lyrics

A court is in session, a verdict is in
No appeal on the docket today
Just my own sin
The walls are cold and pale
The cage made of steel
Screams fill the room
Alone I drop and kneel
Silence now the sound
My breath the only motion around
Demons cluttering around
My face showing no emotion
Shackled by my sentence
Expecting no return
Here there is no penance
My skin begins to burn

(And I said oh) So I held my head up high
Hiding hate that burns inside
Which only fuels their selfish pride
(And I said oh) We're all held captive
Out from the sun
A sun that shines on only some
We the meek are all in one

I hear a thunder in the distance
See a vision of a cross
I feel the pain that was given
On that sad day of loss
A lion roars in the darkness
Only he holds the key
A light to free me from my burden
And grant me life eternally

Should have been dead
On a Sunday morning
Banging my head
No time for mourning
Ain't got no time

(And I said oh) So I held my head up high
Hiding hate that burns inside
Which only fuels their selfish pride
(And I said oh) We're all held captive
Out from the sun
A sun that shines on only some
We the meek are all in one

I cry out to God
Seeking only his decision
Gabriel stands and confirms
I've created my own prison
I cry out to God
Seeking only his decision
Gabriel stands and confirms
I've created my own prison

wait2long and lonelyinCA: I like your tastes in music! Got me listening to Seether again.

gizzy32: "We the meek are all in one" from that song is part of one of my favorite quotes...

"Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth." Matthew 5:5

Being humble is not something I do very well as a person. And it's easy to hold a lot of disdain for other people (pride) to make myself seem like the 'better' person compared to them. I've noticed this especially as I get older and more set in my views on things. Just like other people look at me and see themselves as 'better'... But it really is only when I (and others) are meek or humbled that we can relate to other other and our own difficulties without pride getting in the way. It's a good reminder to myself that having an open mind means having open heart.

I'm blown away from all the great suggestions on this post.  I've loaded up my ipod with music I haven't listen to in years.  The new Seether album is great.

Great post. Espeically about pride.  I can relate... at 31, my pride has been my weakness for the last 10 years. I too am like you - trying to find some humbleness and laugh at myself far more often.

So...
It's just a trip not a way to ease your pain
(this is not a way to ease your pain)
Self-help tell another shrink the same damn thing
(listen for the way to ease your pain)
Stay cool everything is gonna be okay...
(think it's rather time to ease your pain?)

Until you decide to drop again
Until you decide to drop again.

The flip side of sanity is the game
I'm fourteen million miles away
I'm fourteen million miles away
away from sane.

until you decide to drop again
until you decide to drop, drop

now I'm so high so high, so high
so I, so I decide!
'til you decide to drop again
a carnival ride to trip again
until you decide

til you decide to drop again
a carnival ride to trip again
until you decide

until you decide:
it's just a trip not a way to ease your pain
self-help, tell another shrink the same damn thing
until you decide to drop again.

Hey has anyone heard the soundtrack from "The Heroin Diaries" by SIXX.A.M.  ?
A book written by Nicki Sixx from Motley Crue all about his addiction and coming clean.

The lead song "Life is Beautiful" is awesome!  All about him going to a funeral and realizing  how beautiful life really is.

"Just open your eyes....
you're alive.......
life is beautiful....."

It hasn't got much radio time but it soooo right on!

'What Ive Done" lyrics. kick *** song

In this farewell
There’s no blood
There’s no Alibi
‘Cause I’ve Drawn Regret
For the Truth
Of a Thousand Lies

[Pre-Chorus]
So let Mercy Come
And Wash Away
What I’ve Done
I’ve Faced myself
To Cross out what I’ve Become
Erase Myself
And let Go of What I’ve done

Put to rest
What you Thought of Me
Well I Cleaned this Slate
With the Hands of Uncertainty

For What I’ve Done
I’ll start again
And whatever pain may come
Today this ends
I’m Forgiving What I’ve Done!!!

What I’ve Done
Forgiving What I’ve Done

One more that helps me tremendously.

Learn From This Mistake

I've come so close, it's almost hard to believe
When you're up close, it blinds you brilliantly
Just one rush can change your life forever
Just one push can end it all together

Why can't we learn from the plague that surrounds us
Learn from my mistakes
Learn from this mistake
Learn from our mistake
Learn from their mistakes

There's no shoulder to cry on when you have no shame
There's no finger to point when you are to blame
Open book, in my eyes shows you rain, then storming
I can't look, when covered by the nothing and the suffering

Learn from my mistakes
Learn from this mistake
Learn from our mistake
Learn from their mistakes
Learn from my mistake

Believe me, all my friends, in the ending of the story
There's no junkie out there with a happy ending
It consumes you, and haunts you like the devil
It's the art of the process that kills off all the rebels, and that's me.

Learn from this mistake
Learn from my mistake
Learn from our mistake
Learn from my mistake...

Slide Away - Michael Hutchence ( talk about speaking from the grave)- Hutch spent the greater part of the last 10 years of his life taking almost every drug there was. RIP

Are you gonna wake again?
Are you gonna take it down?
Oh babe, I don't wanna deal it
Oh, make it alright
Gimme some, my love
Away, away, away

I just wanna slide away and come alive again
I just wanna slide away and come alive again
I will see that love again, and find a life again
I just wanna slide away and come alive again

I wanted to let it go
Just couldn't let it go
I wanted to let it go
Just couldn't let you go

I would catch you
(Just couldn't let you go)
I'd catch you as you fall
(Just couldn't let it go)
I would catch you
(Just couldn't let you go)
I'd catch you if I heard your call

But you tore a hole in space
Like a dark star, falls from grace
You burn across the sky
And I would find you wings to fly
And I would catch you
I would catch your fall

I just wanna slide away and come alive again
I just wanna slide away and come alive again
I will see that love again, and find a life again
I just wanna slide away and come alive again

This is a poem I found 33 years ago in Rolling Stone Mag and since then numerous people have come forward to claim it as their own.  No one really knows who wrote this, but I think it's appropriate for here.

"Take Me Into Your Arms" or "Miss Heroine"

So now little man you've grown tired of grass,

LSD, Acid, cocaine and hash.

And, someone pretending to be a true friend,

Said, "I'll introduce you to Miss Heroine."

Well honey before you start fooling with me,

Just let me inform you of how it will be.

For I will seduce you and make you my slave,

I've sent men much stronger than you to their graves.

You think you could never become a disgrace,

And end up addicted to poppy seed waste.

You will start inhaling me one afternoon.

You'll take me into your arms very soon.

And once I have entered deep into your veins,

The crawling will nearly drive you insane.

You will need lots of money as you have been told.

For darling, I'm much more expensive than gold.

You'll swindle your mother just for a buck.

You'll turn into something vile and corrupt.

You'll mug and you'll steal for my narcotic charm.

And feel contentment when I'm in your arm.

The day when you realize the monster you've grown,

You'll solemnly swear to leave me alone.

If you think that you've got that mystical knack,

Then try darling, try, to get me off your back.

The vomit, the cramps, your guts tied in knots,

The jangling nerves screaming for just one more shot.

The hot chills and cold sweats, the withdrawl (withdrawal) pains,

Can only be saved by my little white grains.

There's no other way and there's no need to look,

For deep inside you will know you are hooked.

You'll desperately run to the pusher and then,

You'll welcome me back in your arms once again.

And when you return, just as I have foretold,

I know you will give me your body and soul.

You'll give up your morals, your conscience, your heart,

And you will be mine till, "DEATH DO US PART."

staind- its been awile

And it's been awhile
Since I could hold my head up high
And it's been awhile
Since I first saw you
And it's been awhile
Since I could stand on my own 2 feet again
And it's been awhile
Since i could call you

And everything I can't remember
It's f***** up as it all may seem
The consequences that i render
I stretch myself beyond my pains

And it's been awhile
Since I couldn't say that I wasn't addicted
And it's been awhile
Since I could say I loved myself as well
And it's been awhile
Since I've gone & f***** things up, just like I always do
And it's been awhile
But all that sh** seems to disappear when I'm with you

And everything I can't remember
It's f***** up as it all may seem
The consequences that i render
I've gone & f****** thing up again, again....

Why must I feel this waaaaay...
Just make this go awaaaaay...
Just one more peaceful day

And it's been awhile
Since I could look @ myself straight
And it's been awhile
Since I said I'm sorry
And it's been awhile
Since I've seen the way the candles light your face
And it's been awhile
But I can still remember just the way you taste

And everything I can't remember
It's f***** up as it all may seem
I cannot blame this on my father, he did the best he could for me

And it's been awhile
Since I could hold my head up high
And it's been awhile
Since I said I'm sorry

I've been "Stuck In The Middle With You" guys and enjoying a great many tunes and remembering someone saying, "Don't Panic", Jacqui, it'll be o.k.  At times I've been a real "Head Knocker" and thought I'd never get through it.  I'm so glad to have you all "Show Me The Way", and get me through a "Wild Night" on many occassions.  I've even met an unknown "LIttle Sister" and a lot of other fine friends.  I've been the "Last D.J." and played my "Squeezebox" on many occasions too, remembering always that "Groove Is In The Heart".  At other times, I've yelled to a few of y'all, "Hold On, I'm Coming", "Right Down The Line".  I am the "Original Prankster", and "Pretty Fly for a White Guy (ok, girl)".  I have hung with a few of you even if in spirit, "Down On The Corner", acting like a "Cowgirl in the Sand" on a "No Where Road".  Sometimes feel like a "Glass Onion" or like I'm "Turning Japanese" or something, but then someone reminds me that "Love is the Drug" and it's a "Good Day Sunshine".  "It Don't Come Easy" y'all, but I'm glad as heck to have avoided the "Scar Tissue" with y'all and "Enjoy The Silence".  Remember, it's a "Livin' Thing" and "Time is Ticking Out", so will somebody please "Play That Funky Music"......besides, I'm not sure how much longer I can keep this going... : )

To confused456 - I can believe that Axle put on a good show, I just wish he would have when we saw him.  He was really drunk and slurring his words, came on 2 hours late and left the stage early. (I used to think he was so fine too lol)  People were really p*ssed.  But then Metallica came on and they were just unbelievable, I mean excellent.  I sat there mezmerized the whole time.

Has anyone every seen AC/DC in concert?  They were awesome!  Out of the bands I have seen the very best were Metallica, AC/DC & believe it or not, 38 Special.   I was really surprised at what a good show they put on.

I remember at the AC/DC concert my then b/f wanted to get as close to the stage as possible.  So we start heading that way and before you know it we are all the way there.  I was leaning on it and my b/f was standing directly behind me with both arms outstretched to the stage bracing himself so he could push people back.  People were pushing and pushing and I nearly got suffocated to death.  Very scary and the last time I ever want to get that close to a band again.

Well, I got to see Slash and Scott since they are together now in Velvet Revolver and the song "Fall To Pieces" is about drugs anyway so its a great tune to listen to about this. BTW.....They were freaking awesome!!!! Having both those 2 on stage!!! That was really a great concert!!!!!!!!!

When i was partying heavy with hubby we were at lake powell with some friends and rented a house boat for a week and did nothin but partied, my husband and his friend went into town to get more beer and ran into Axel and Slash at a Mcdonalds believe it or not and they came back to the house boat and stayed and partied with us for 2 day's. They had the coolest blazer with kick *** tunes. was so loud i thought i was going to throw up lol....we had a great time with them but yes they were coked up the whole time, Axel's lips were always blue, pretty wild times lol...Can't remember why they were driving or were to.would have to ask hubby that one.
When i was a teen i went with the singer for April Wine if you remember them at all, that was a trip....

Thanks...I'm 42...my head is WAY too small for big hair, but I had the the punk look goin' on back in the day.  Always loved what my my dad listened to, so he was a huge influence.  Glad you caught all of that too, figured some people wouldn't have a clue about some of those songs...hell, I had to narrow it down to just those, 'cause my brain started to hurt.

I cannot believe someone else listens to DOWN.  PanterA and Down get me through life, it seems.  Although you are still using take heart that you can quit.  If Phil Anselmo can get his **** together anyone can.  Honestly, he has been a huge inspiration to me.  And he is so truthful in his lyrics and works out his issues while helping others.  Hang in there.

I am seeing Metallica Friday night and it is but one small reminder of how life has so much to offer and to enjoy all the things that are truly who I am.
