Oxy Withdrawal Question

Hi All,
I'm new here and horribly addicted to oxycontin (160mg plus a day). I started taking oxy about 5 years ago because it cured my depression and I was sick of taking antidepressants that didn't work. I guess why I started doesn't matter. I want to quit. I've tried tapering and cold turkey and never made it past 24 hrs. I can't disappear or take off at work. I'm a lawyer with a lot of new responsibility and I can't afford to mess up my job with feigning the flu right now. I need help developing a plan to quit. What has worked best for you guys? cold turkey? tapering? I'm considering cold turkey but I want to know, as closely as possible, how long the horrible withdrawal will last? I think if I could count down the days and know, say....only 10 more days and it will be over...or 5 or whatever...maybe that would help. Do you think I can continue to work while withdrawing? Also, I've read some posts that day 3-4 are horrible. Is that true? Please help me if you can. I want my life back. I feel like such a fraud. Oxy has gone from helping me to chaining me to the bottle and the house.....I hate it.

80mg 4x a day!  That is a large/huge/enormous amount of oxi but I assume you must have some serious physical issues that you're dealing with.  There is only a couple other drugs stronger than oxi and If the doctor is going to prescribe that much each day then I would assume he has valid reason for it.  IF you get off the drug...how will you handle the pain?  Maybe speak to the physician and ask it working out will eventually help with the pain?  You're way out of my league but I would immediately start a daily regiment of swimming an hour a day and work to tapper off that much oxi.
Again, I don't know what you're dealing with and how serious it is, I don't know why your doctor doesn't provide alternatives if you've spoken to him but maybe there is no other alternative.  I feel for you!  Good luck!!!

This is the social addiction forum ,we have a substance abuse forum as well it gets alot more posts ...... I would post over there as well .I would post it as a new question .I will say I don't know what you are taking the meds for but that is alot 80mg four times a day .However that can also have to do with the reason you are on it .

Again I am on this site for one more time to ask ??..my dr has me on 80mg 4 times a day all I am askin is that sounding too much I dont know about this pill..not much at all.But the more I hear about it the more I read on here about this I am scared..worried etc;..
I started out by takin 5 mg of oxycocet to 10 oxycotin ..to 40 to 60 now 80mg I want to tell me to take me down from these..my pharmacy is not liking it at all and said it should be every 12 hours .Can she take me down from these and refuse to do what dr says?

Day 6 for me and I'm feeling a lot better.  Day 3 and 4 were the worst.  I drank a lot of V-fusion, walked atleast 1 hr a day, soaked in a whirpool and drank redbull or similar when feeling no energy.  I hate getting off of these because I feel so good on them but after going threw this I will be much wiser in the future.  Will I take them again?  Probably, but never again everyday!  Good luck to all!  Wish I had the perfect solution or answer but I don't.  Just hang in there and each day gets better not to mention the confidence in the long run that you've succeeded with such a addictive drug!

is this pill oxycontin dangerous to your body??..I enjoy reading this site .it makes one think very hard..and knowing you're not the only person goin thru this..so I thank you for this..to all of you!!

im in day 3 of cold turkey withdraw from 60 mil 3 times a day of oxy any help?

Make a plan and stick to it. Taper one less pill every 3-4 days. Look into a suppliment Rx like methadone, suboxone, ultram to start taking right after your last pill. And although they may help with many of the withdrawal symptoms, you'll still feel very very fatigued and anxious for at least 2 weeks after you take your last Oxy. Start vitamin suppliments NOW to replenish what the Oxy has taken from your body. Sleeping pills for the nights of the first month is necessary cause no matter what, you'll have a hard time sleeping even if your other withdrawal symptoms are gone. And the more sleep you get the better you'll feel during the day. Good luck!

Finally, a sight that actually provides solid information. I 'm probably a lite weight compared to some of you but I've been taking 80mg Oxy daily for about 9 months.  I usually break it up into 3 or four pieces and take it throughout the day.  I love it for several reasons but can't afford to keep taking it due to street costs.  I'm on day 4 of the withdrawal and I hope it's better than day 3.  The first 2 days I took 750mg of vicodin every four hours to assist me threw the process but day 3 (cold turkey)was hell.  I'm going to hold fast to my withdrawal and hope the symptoms decrease subsantially over the next few days.  If not, I'm in trouble because I don't know how long I can hold out and I crave it very badly.

Here's a little prewritten article that I post to people wanting to go cold turkey. Read it, and post if you have any more specific questions. I'll be glad to help in any way I can..

This is a work in progress...something I've been working on off and on for the last couple of weeks. It's not considered complete, but has lots of info from lots of sources. If any of the "old timers" have anything to add, let me know and I'll add it to the document. I hope to use this to post a general "how to" every couple of days or so.

Listed below are suggestions for detoxing and quitting an opiate addiction. They are just suggestions compiled from the detox plans of people that have gone through cold turkey detox before. They are just that, suggestions, and any detox plan is best when done under a doctor's care. Consult your doctor before trying any of the suggestions below.
This is prewritten for anyone who is beginning or planning on beginning a colt turkey withdrawal to opiates. This includes drugs such as tramadol (Ultracet and Ultram) codeine (Tylenol #3, #4), Darvocet, Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Norco, Lortab and derivatives),  Oxycodone (Endocet, Percocet, Oxycontin), Morphine, Demerol. Fentanyl, and Dilaudud. There are many other opiates not listed, so if you don’t see it listed, you can still use these suggestions if it’s an opiate based addiction. None of these apply to benzodiazepine based addictions. These addictions should never be dealt with by going cold turkey. Always consult a doctor for a detox plan for benzos.

First of all, opiate withdrawals are uncomfortable, but rarely life threatening. You may think you’re going to die, but most of the withdrawal symptoms are just very uncomfortable. Opiate withdrawal symptoms usually start 12-24 hours after your last dose. But, the timing of withdrawal symptoms depends upon the drug taken, length of time you’ve been taking it, and how you react to medications. The physical withdrawals usually last 3-7 days, with days 3 and 4 being the worst. Once again, this is all dependent on the person. You can expect these symptoms. Dilated pupils, diarrhea, runny nose, goose bumps, abdominal pain, stomach cramps, sweating, agitation, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, leg cramps, general aches and pains, and sleeplessness. This list is not absolute. You may experience all of these symptoms, only some of them, or other symptoms. Again, we are all different. Below is the famous Thomas Recipe. It gives some general information along with supplements that help with the withdrawal symptoms. The only thing I would add to this list is a blood pressure drug named clonidine. It effectively lowers the blood pressure and lessens many of the withdrawal symptoms. Most any doctor will prescribe it if you’re honest as to why you need it. Discuss dosages and frequency with your doctor.

Thomas Recipe:

1. Valium (or another benzodiazepine such as Klonopin, Librium, Ativan or Xanax). Of these, Valium and Klonopin are best suited for tapering since they come in tablet form. Librium is also an excellent detox benzo, but comes in capsules, making it hard to taper the dose. Ativan or Xanax should only be used if you can't get one of the others.
2. Imodium (over the counter, any drug or grocery store).
3. L-Tyrosine (500 mg caps) from the health food store.
4. Strong wide-spectrum mineral supplement with at least 100% RDA of Zinc, Phosphorus, Copper and Magnesium.
5. Vitamin B6 caps.
6. Access to hot baths or a Jacuzzi (or hot showers if that's all that's available).

How to use the recipe:
Begin your detox with regular doses of Valium (or alternate benzo). Start with a dose high enough to produce sleep. Before you use any benzo, make sure you're aware of how often it can be safely taken. Different benzos have different dosing schedules. Taper your Valium dosage down after each day. The goal is to get through day 4, after which the worst WD symptoms will subside. You shouldn't need the Valium after day 4 or 5. During detox, hit the hot bath or Jacuzzi as often as you need to for muscle aches. Don't underestimate the effectiveness of hot soaks. Spend the entire time, if necessary, in a hot bath. This simple method will alleviate what is for many the worst opiate WD symptom.
Use the Imodium aggressively to stop the runs. Take as much as you need, as often as you need it. Don't take it, however, if you don't need it. At the end of the fourth day, you should be waking up from the Valium and experiencing the beginnings of the opiate WD malaise. Upon rising (empty stomach), take the L-Tyrosine. Try 2000 mgs, and scale up or down, depending on how you feel. You can take up to 4,000 mgs. Take the L-Tyrosine with B6 to help absorption. Wait about one hour before eating breakfast. The L-Tyrosine will give you a surge of physical and mental energy that will help counteract the malaise. You may continue to take it each morning for as long as it helps. If you find it gives you the "coffee jitters," consider lowering the dosage or discontinuing it altogether. Occasionally, L-Tyrosine can cause the runs. Unlike the runs from opiate WD, however, this effect of L-Tyrosine is mild and normally does not return after the first hour. Lowering the dosage may help. With breakfast, take the mineral supplement. As soon as you can force yourself to, get some mild exercise such as walking, cycling, swimming, etc. This will be hard at first, but will make you feel considerably better.

Hey there,
I really can relate to you. I was a sales excutive for several years during my oxy use. I would give presentations to large groups and no one had a clue that I was so enthusiatic because I was so happy being high! Anyway, I'm not totally over the oxy yet. I've been off for 6 days now. I'm off and on every month actually because I have a legitamate prescription but I over take them and always run out early. I take probably around 100 mg's a day when I'm taking them. As far as the depression, it does come back when I run out due to the w/d's but the good news it, it does not last for long. This week has actually been the hardest week I've ever had off of my med's and my depression subsided at about day 5. Again, everyone is different but if you can get past the first couple of days, you may find that you don't have the depression that you're anticipating. I think tapering may make things easier for you but of course, I can't say for sure. I know that when I have been able to taper, I haven't had depression or w/d's but I have had cravings. I always miss my med's when they're gone even though I know they're bad for me. I guess it's just the nature of the drug. Good luck w/ the tapering and please keep us posted on how you're doing. Oh, and you're not a fraud. You just have an issue w/ oxy that you're obviously trying to deal with. I think that makes you very brave. All the best to you! -Hope '04

I have been clean for 13 days and went cold turkey. The most important thing is to want to quit and commit yourself to it. I was using 15-20 norco 10/325's a day. I can give you a taper schedule if you want to go that way. We all can help you through the w/d's and support you. I think using them for depression was the reason I got hooked. They made me happy for awhile and then they became a misery for me. I have tried to quit numerous times and my longest was 24 days. I don't think that I had the tools or support at that time and started using again. I was really feeling good too! You are going to have a rough (physical) 1-5 days and I can copy the Thomas Recipe for you. If you taper, I think you can continue work with no problem. I understand that this is a new responsibility and am taking that into consideration. I will post the taper for you first.  Good luck!!!

First, you need to figure out what kind of schedule you have for
taking hydros/opiates

1. How soon after you get up in the mornings do you take your first
dose and how many do you take then to feel "normal"?

2. When do you take your next dose, and other doses throughout the
day? And, how many each time?

3. When do take your last dose of the day and how many that time?

Stage ONE:

Take the same first dose as you normally do - same time, same amount.

Cut the rest of your days' doses in half.

If you normally take your last dose prior to 7pm, ADD one tablet about
an hour before bedtime. This will help you sleep and stay comfortable
through the night. If you normally take your last dose after 7pm,
consider moving it back so you can do this bed time dose or adjust it
down in amount and move it later so that you take it as close to
bedtime as possible. The bedtime dose really, really makes a huge
difference.

You should feel NO physical discomfort at all during this, or any
stage of the tapering plan. You really need to listen to your body
when tapering, not your mind. Remember, opiates work on the brain,
not the body. The acetomenephen in the drug is the ONLY thing
providing real pain relief, the hydro is working on your brain. Learn
the difference between a physical withdrawal symptom and a mental
craving. Do NOT trust your brain with this.

Stay on stage one for about 4-5 days. The length of each stage
depends on you. There is no right and no wrong. Once you have
stabilized on stage one, so that your brain is no longer telling you
that you need more, you can move on to stage 2.

Stage TWO:

Cut your morning dose by 2 tablets, so if you were taking 4, take 2.
If you were already only taking 2, take 1. If you were only taking 1,
take 1/2. If you were only taking 1/2 already, are you sure you need
a tapering plan? :-)

For the rest of the days dose, the objective is to cut down by 1-1/2
to 2 pills total (for the rest of the day). Keep that extra bedtime
dose of 1 pill going.

A good time frame for stage two is again 4-5 days, but just like stage
one, do what feels best to your body. Stay on it a week if you need
to. Just don't move to stage three until you feel completely
comfortable on stage two. Also, just like on stage one, you should
feel NO physical discomfort at all.

Stage THREE and beyond:

The objective is to cut out a comfortable amount per day for each
subsequent phase. Stabilize at that lower dose, then go lower again.
You should now cut that bedtime dose in half. By the time you work
your way down to just 1/2 tab per day and are comfortable there, you
are ready to stop completely. It is better to cut out a small amount
from each dose of the day than to cut out (as an example) 2 pills from
1 dose and leave the other doses the same.

The whole idea with this plan is to cut back in VERY small steps so
that you will not have any physical withdrawal symptoms.

Now, your assignment is to get out a pen and paper and do the math.
Put your plan in writing. Line out exactly what you are taking now
and exactly what each phase will be for you. Don't try to set a
completion date - that is way too much pressure and will set you up to
fail (in most cases). Follow your custom tailored plan for each stage
until you feel ready to move to the next stage. Believe me, your body
will know when you are ready to move. I can also tell you that IF
(and that is a big IF) you start to feel any W/D's while on this plan,
there's a 99% chance that it is your MIND doing it to you and not your
body. This plan is so gentle that even me (who was taking about 20
per day when I did it) did not have any W/D's from it. The only
symptoms I had were mental!

The depression and the "monkey" can drive you crazy. At a 160 mg daily, i dont think you would want to work while dealing with this issue

First, thanks for listening and replying. Real depression is horrible and I, too, tried all the antidepressants they make and none of them worked....the oxy did....but now I'm in this hell hole of addiction. It's funny though: absolutely no one that knows me would ever think I'm either depressed or an addict.......I present as happy, adjusted, great at my job, blah, blah, blah.....and being a lawyer everyone thinks I'm so "together." What a crock of bull.....
Second, I wanted to ask you if you had beat the oxy's and if it made the depression come back? That's the main reason I've never made it very long trying to stay clean....the crushing depression...but I've read that depression, anxiety are part of the withdrawal symptoms. I may be totally fooling myself but I think I'm in a much better place mentally now. How would I know though. I'm high 24/7....I'm thinking about starting a taper tomorrow and following it until next Thursday and then suffering through the weekend. I don't know.  I was going to try suboxone but then I read that it just substitutes for the oxys and then you have to withdraw from it. If I'm going to withdraw, then I'll just withdraw from the oxys.....I'm all over the place. Sorry. I just feel such a release having someone to talk to about this. Like I said, I'm a huge fraud to the rest of the world and I ran across this site and for the first time in a long time, I feel a tiny bit of hope......your post meant the world to me. Hi there,
I just wanted to say that your post hit me really close to home because the reason I ended up hooked on Oxycodone was a result of depression. I take it for chronic pain but about 2 1/2 years ago, I noticed that it also actually took the horrible depression I had away. I also never seemed to get any benefit from anti-depressants. I've been on all of them and they did not work for me. I'm sure you'll relate to me when I say that when you are in a severe depression, you'll do ANYTHING to get out, including taking drugs. As far as w/d, everyone is different of course but I personally would absolutely NOT want to work while trying to get off of the oxy. I think you could work but you just may not feel in top form. For me, the w/ made me very lethargic and down for about 4 days. At day 5 I felt much better, but again, everyone is different. I think tapering is best if u can do it. I can't because I just end up taking all the pills I have and regretting it later. Tapering works well though if you're able to stick toa regimen. I wish you much luck w/ nthis.
