Pain after detox

Pain after detox

My daughter has had an intractable migraine for 12 years. It waxes and wanes. She's had a couple of really good spells that lasted over 18 months when she didn't need any narcotics for pain. She was able to get herself off morphine (once) and demerol (once), with very little problem because the migraine pain was so diminished. Since March, 2005, it's been downhill. She has been working with a pain mgt dr and he's been a Godsend. But is determined to get her off the oxy. She was up to 80 mg bid, and was decreasing 10mg every week. She's fed up, and just want's it over. She decided last night that the last 50 mgs/day she will decrease 10 mg/day. Drs believe that once she's off all narcotics for 3 months, the DNA on the receptors will remap (hopefully) to what they were prior to the pain cycle. They think the pain will stop.  We hope they are right. How, in the name of all that is holy, is she supposed to deal with the pain during those three months? Torodol and all the NSAIDS don't touch it. She's gotten off 60 mg bid methadone by using fentenyl patch and losenge. She got off the fentenyl by using oxy. All of this was prescribed by her pain mgt dr. I'm pretty fragile right now, and I don't think I have enough strength to get us through this. Her dad, my husband, is wonderful; but being on the wagon 26 years has lived one day at a time for a very long time. Honestly, the thought of being done with all this is beginning to occupy too much of my mind. I've promised her I won't leave her alone. Mostly, I need support (we do have great therapists).  She has been prescribed Seroquel 100 mg bid; Clonazepam, 2 mg tid; Clonidine HCL 0.2 mg bid; Haloperidol 0.5 mg. tid; and Dicyclomine 20 mg qid. Can I increase her dose of anything to reduce her withdrawal symptoms? Do we continue to use these drugs to relieve any residual withdrawals? We see her Dr. Tuesday. He's not available to talk to about this until then? What do all these drugs do? Any help. Any advise. Blessings.

oh Betts, I'm sorry, I just don't have this info for you.  The only thing I can suggest is if you are thinking of adjusting her meds then call an ER or urgent care until you find a doc who can give you the RIGHT answers..

the other option is to just know that withdrawals simply are not fun - and she may just have to suffer at the dose she's on for a few days... it's not fun, no doubt, but if that's what the doc perscribed, maybe it's just best to stick to it...

heck, i don't know.  i just know we all had w/d's and NO ONE had a good time during them.

good luck to you....

be well,
mj
