Fox news which is very Republican slanted but sometimes has objective views had a big thing last nite on all of this......it all started to balloon in 2000 with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac giving out these loans and giving campaign contributions to repubs and dems alike......there were many warnings from many economists to Congress and Bush that all ignored......no regulation and of course these banks were making money hand over fist and the fist has come to be inserted in our booties!!!!!Last Sunday on 60 mins the FBI posted some emails from these banks brokers that were selling these mortgages and they said"we hope we're rich and retired b4 this phony house of cards tumbles down"!!!!I'll bet no charges will be filed against these ppl and it is easily seen that they were fudging their books.i have to turn off tv for awhile...like so many of u and rightfully so get so worried and pissed at all of this....i felt this was coming as i watched my retirement shrinking since 06......none of us including Congress knows how this will pan out...its a one day atta time thing and so anxiety provoking and devastating for many!Archway Cookies used to be one of the biggest employers in my small town for many years.....their doors will close tommorrow leaving over 100 out of work.Abbott Labs which used to employ over 400 ppl here closed it doors after many years....they knocked building to the ground which were close to 90 years old.....we will watch this all unfold day by day with little choices which stinks for all.Feeling helpless is the greatest angst!

What they said was " there is no quick fix". The bailout will keep the economy from shutting down completely but there is lots to untangle before things will be back on an even keel. The first long term solution  they HIGHLY recommended is that new regulations need to be made and enforced ASAP. That's why we need to elect folks who truly are pro- regulation.
Somebody on here mentioned voting for representatives who voted against the bailout. That depends. Did they vote against the bailout because they are dyed in the wool anti- regulators? If so- they will not be part of a long term solution.
Whether they voted for or against, if they are pro-regulation- we need them in there.

I couldn't agree more.   I would like to know who threw in the ear marks on this bail-out bill and no one will say.  Money for Hollywood producers, wooden arrows, rum producers etc......

PS-If you are really po'd about this bailout business, here is where you have to focus. It is not about who is a "babe" or a POW or  is folksy and down home. It is about basic economic philosophy. Do they really believe in regulation? What is their record? Do they have the will and the intelligence and the collaborative attitudes that it will take to get  the regulations and transparency in place that will prevent us from repeating this ugly mess?
I repeat: SARAH PALIN stated, during the debate, that government has to "get out of the way" - that is her philosophy and the philosophy of her running mate. And it is not only the top dogs that we need to question on this. I urge everyone to question their local candidates on this issue. Do they support regulation or do they think govermnment should "get out of the way"? And what is their record in this regard. Dem or Rep- anyone who is unwilling to support regulation needs to be shown the door.

With all the complexities of Wall Street etc., how can there Not be regulations? There has to be, plain and simple. It's like taking away ALL the rules and laws that people live by everyday. It causes chaos!

I listened to a NPR program yesterday where they very simply walked through the details of this crisis.Although many want to blame people who accepted loans that were too dear for their budgets( aggressively sold to them by predatory lenders), I got a better picture of what's been happening. After listening, it seems clear to me that the biggest culprits were those who were selling and buying something called " credit default swaps". Basically it is unregulated insurance on investments. Big companies or investors invest mega bucks. They then buy a credit default swap to insure their investment. So if the borrower goes under the credit default swap vendors pays them back. The credit default swap vendor gets a premium from the buyer of the CDS
(interesting acronym) and makes money- betting that the company that borrowed the mega bucks will be a-ok. Because of deregulation an interesting thing happened. Unlimited other speculators could buy the insurance on that same investment- which wasn't even theirs! Kinda like buying life insurance on your neighbors. Basically THEY were betting on the original buyer to fail. AND the credit default swap vendors- like AIG- didn't have to have the bucks to back up their guarentees. Because of dereg- no one knows who owns these things, how many are out there, or what impact they have on the solvency of the companies and banks that were doing these deals. Therefore, money lending has ground to a halt at the business level because no body knows who is a dependable borrower anymore. When borrowing dries up at the upperlevels, jobs get cut and people stop being able to pay their mortgages, stop spending, and capitalism stalls-such a house of cards.
The bottom line is- if these things had been regulated, we wouldn't be here. The attitude that we have to get goverment "out of our way" ( as Sarah Palin espoused at the debate) is the culprit.
We need to elect people who believe in regulation- it's an important philosophical set.

ibizan.....I couldn't agree more. The Bush administration has destroyed this country, but every time I post that, thier are people that post back that congress made this mess. They don't get that the president sets the agenda....like with our wonderful bail-out and their scare tactics to get it passed.

Bush was a big proponet of de-regulation which rooted itself in big banks lending....BIG!much of this is his fault.....the last 8 years is evidence enough....how i feel for those retiring now...or having lost a job....my retirement nest egg i;ve had for 30 years now is half of what it was....yes half is better than none. more like a lil blue robins egg..but it is said that on the minimum we many not see a turnaround in this at a minimum for 2-3 years.....and Suze orman and many other analysts say at a max 6-10 years!Osama Bin Laden was heard to have said after 9/11 that he wanted to cripple us the most where it hurt...our financial world and did he ever......he KNEW how Bush would handle this!smart man for living underground like a tunnel rat!

CNN played the debate again today. I only listened and did not watch(had my back to tv while on computer).  You guys are right....Palin answered very few of the questions and did alot of rambling on about her rehearsed talking points.
Many on here say this mess is not the presidents fault. So if it really is congress that gets everything done, why don't we at least get a president and vice pres.  that can speak intellegently. It's so embarrasing having a president that comes off like an idiot. Lets not make that mistake again. We need brains and forsight to get this country out of this mess, not just a folksy talker with no knowledge.

I LOVE PALIN!!

I AM A PALINISTA!!  lol

I'm not a hockey mom, but I am a hockey wife.

And a middle-class income wage earner from "Main Street".

I RELATE to this woman, and WOW, what a commanding presence!!

Tina Fey does a good impression, I might add. lol

All the winking, the doggoneits and the you betchas in the debate last night made me laugh.

Sarah Palin is SUCH a breath of fresh air.  So new and so fresh and so different that the Obama camp should be forfeiting their "Change" signs to the McCain camp. lol

BARRACUDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the past I have sometimes voted for the odd ball out there for President, because my feeling is we need someone other than the typical Washington bureaucrat, the professional politician. Problem is, by the time they climb the ranks, get through the campaign and would get to the top office, they're in it. They've been fluffed, prepped, filled in and f'd up. So as the years have passed and the more I get into and understand politics, the more I understand the need for some one who understands the workings of Washington and the rest of the world. Some one who can maneuver among them, knows how to work it for the people (us,the little guys) and still maintain a deep seated level of goodness. Some one who has not been so far from the regular people to have lost sight of what we need, yet knows enough of the Washington BS, that they won't be overwhelmed by the complexities of it.
I feel Obama and Biden fit what I'm looking for.  I absolutely get a sense of goodness in Obama. He's a good man and an intelligent man. I feel the same about Biden, my cup of joe.
I'm afraid Palin will suffer from the surge in her position, just like a lot of these movie stars that shot to stardom to quickly, overwhelmed, unaware and unprepared. This is a woman who's political career in Alaska still allowed her time to be a mother of 5, hunting, fishing, PTA and soccer. She is unprepared to deal with the time, stress, complexities and cruelty her potential position will put her in.
This is just my opinion.

flmagie....i agree it was a bit much with the folksie thing......

Our founding fathers did want normal people to run for office...do the time then go back to the farm or the print press.......So it might be good to have a real average person in office.

I really think that the pres and vice pres are not running anything and it is the group of people around them...so the fact that she does not know every thing that Biden or Mcain know is ok with me.

Its like when i first hit a golf ball....i was pretty good i just did what felt right and was not wrapped up with a bunch of thoughts on what and how and where.....Then after playing for a while and learning from lots of people...i would try to rember and think of all these things that evryone said while i was swinging....and i am no where close to as good as i was at the start.

She's not on the inside and so she might make good choices....choices that others on the inside can not make. She might just do whats right instead of doing what her party expects......

I'm still undecided...

Lovepat & Lateaugust,  You two said it.  And she did basically say she refused to answer one of the questions, which reminded me of maybe, Bush or Cheney.  Towards the end, I felt like she was answering questions like she was in a Promotional Ad. I find her "bib overall and pitch fork" way of speaking a bit to folksy for an high position elected official. That winking thing she was doing is still driving me crazy!
Although she did better than expected, the bar was set very low for her.
She's definitely not my cup of tea. Biden is my cup of Joe.

I guess I am the odd one out,  I think Gov Palin answered perhaps 20% of the questions she was asked and relied on rheteric for the 80% with canned answers that had nothing to do with the  original question.    i.e.  she was asked for her weak areas,   she answered with only her strong points.  Just one example of many.  Sorry  but I didn't see any substance in the questions she answered, rather a lot of pom pom waving.

Unfortunatley I think expectations were so very low based on Palin's previous interviews, it would be hard to guage how intellectual or factual the debate performance was in reality.

I think I look at it too analytically.......   she just doesn't touch me from an emotional stand point.

Just my opinion.

Palin just did not answer the questions. At one point she even said that she didn't intend to answer them. It sounded like she was giving a preplanned speech in small paragraphs between the questions.  Because Biden actually responded to the questions, he seemed more straightforward to me. She was likeable ( although the "aw,shucks golly" stuff isn't my cup of tea) but he demonstrated a more detailed knowlege base. So from here. although Palin didn't look as bad as she did in the Couric interviews,  Biden definitely won.I really feel more comfortable with him as second in command.
