Post-op Meds changed???

by blueyz, Oct 05, 2007 07:24PM
I have some q's regarding my post-op pain meds that were just changed.  I had shoulder surgery on Tuesday and the nerve block which is supposed to last at least 12 hours wore off after 6.  A little history..This is my 8th shoulder surgery,so I'm not new to this, but some of these meds are new to me.  The first day and night post-op were horrible and even with 10 mg oxycodone 12 hr ES plus 5/325 percs the pain was not at all managed.  I spoke to the Nurse the next day and she looked in my chart and made a huge connection!  The epilepsy meds I am on act to diminish the effects and duration of pain meds.

This was HUGE for me! I have struggled with pills over the last year or two thru-out the surgeries and the meds just never seemed to do it.  Now I know why, it pisses me off that my previous surgeons never picked up on that.

Anyway, she prescribed oxycodone 5mg (no tylenol) that reads I can take up to 3 every 3 hours.  In addition she gave me Hydroxyzine HCL 25 mg.  She told me this would help enhance the effects and duration of the meds.  I am doing much better, but I'm still a little unsure as to what I'm taking.  I've looked them up, but thought someone might have pharmacy or nursing experience...or just more experience with pills.

Here are a few basic q's...The nurse said the 12 hr es are oxycontin, but the bottle reads oxycodone 10 mg...Same thing???

Then the new meds read oxycodone 5mg.  Is this just the same as the percocet just w/o the tylonel? And what about the hydroxyzine???

I just want to be educated about what exactly I'm taking....

Thanks in advance guys!

As far as the Oxycontin, it is the same as oxycodone its just time released with no APAP

the 5mg oxycodone is sometimes called roxicodone its essentially percaset with no APAP and this is immediate release i assume for breakthrough pain.

the other is a anti histamine... they are used as potentiators for the pain meds, give them a 'kick" so to speak.  its also helps counter act any itching the meds may give you.

Thanks Ladies!  So do I have this right that Oxycontin is basically percocet w/o Tylenol? Just different mg's or time release.  Does the time release make it the contin? Soooo confusing?

"contin" was the brand name so to speak of the time release version I believe Purdue was the first manufacturer.
I wouldn't worry about it.. bunch of drug talk...  i hope its helping you after this surgery.. and the anti histimine is helping them work against your other meds..
