ADDICTION: SOCIAL COMMUNITY
Serious food for thought for my fellow addicts

Serious food for thought for my fellow addicts

Hey everybody,

Just a quick backround note on the post I'm about to write on this side of the forum. We have been goofing around on the social side of the forum (like we always do) and we've been on the subject of having an official singer/songwriter for the forum. I've been campaigning to have Neil Diamond be our official singer so whenever you sign on to the forum you will hear Neil Diamond music playing in a continuous loop (sounds good to me). There's been lots of support for Neil (feel free to vote on the Social Side-there is an ongoing poll keeping track of the votes)  Anyway, long story short is that lots of bad jokes came out of this and we all have been having our laughs over the last few days. It was just suggested that if Neil didn't get voted in we might want to consider Janis Joplin. My first thought was "What?!? Not Neil?!?" and then my second thought was that she died from a drug overdose. Here is basically what I posted on the social side:
****************************************************************************************************
I love Janis Joplin but she can't be our official singer/songwriter because she overdosed and died :-(
Having said that that means there is a lot of good music we can't use in our soundtrack because there was an actual drug overdose associated with them:
Alice in Chains, Blind Mellon, Sublime, Mother Love Bone, Graham Parsons, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, The Who, The Vandals, The Sex Pistols, The Germs, Skinny Puppy, Morphine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Def Leppard, Atari Teenage Riot, Nike Drake, Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker, The Pretenders, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Hole, The Temptations, Rory Gallagher, The Squirrel Nut Zippers, Tommy Dorsey, The Righteous Brothers, Malfunkshun, Ratt, Crazy Horse, The Byrds, The Smashing Pumpkins, Ramones, Culture Club (okay..they sucked), AC-DC, Three Dog Night, Blues Traveler, Little Feat, Uriah Heep, Canned Heat, The Associates, Deep Purple, EMF, The Grateful Dead, Average White Band, Thin Lizzy, The Blues Brothers (tragedy).

Then we have our awesome musicians/bands who had people die BECAUSE they were abusing drugs/alcohol or they overdosed on it but it caused them to drown or whatever. So a drug overdose or habitual abuse killed them but the official cause of death is listed as stroke or heart attack or cirrhosis of the liver or GI bleed or head injury or whatever:

Styx, Billie Holiday, Nirvana, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, The Doors, Humble Pie, Mamas and the Papas, Derick and the Dominos, The Guess Who,  Michael Jackson, to name just a few.

Sorry, not trying to be a downer....but these two lists are only a tiny, small portion of the musicians/bands that have had drug abuse ruin them.
Obviously these are only some of the bands that have been affected and I've only listed off the ones I could think of off the top of my head. I'm sure if I spent some more time on it I could make my list a whole lot longer. Plus, there are tons of other musicians/bands that don't fit into the 'good music' catergory in my opinion so I don't have them listed because I don't like their music (with the exception of Culture Club--I have NO idea why I put them on my list because I really think their music sux.) I didn't care for Michael Jackson's music much either, but he was a pioneer so I put him on the list. There are lots of individual jazz and blues musicians I could have put down, but most people wouldn't know who they were so I tried to keep it main stream and relevant to all.

Anyway, I know we all like to joke around and have fun- I do too. But every now and then I gotta go for a reality check. I LOVE music and it saddens me to see all the great talent we've lost because of someone's inability to overcome their addiction.

Any thoughts or ideas from anyone?
Any names of music we can't include in our soundtrack?

Hope I didn't bring everyone down. I'm the first one to goof around to lighten things up. It's just that I was reading through this post and realized that Janis Joplin couldn't be used and it made me sad and it made me start thinking....
******************************************************************************************************

Anyway, the above is what I wrote. I just wanted to share it with people. All the bands that I know of that have been ruined by drugs kind of boggles the mind. We've lost so many great musicians to addiction. It made me realize the world has lost so many un-named people that had a lot to offer the world also but they lost the battle with their addiction.
I don't want anyone here to lose that battle.

Stay strong,
Greatgreebo

ps-feel free to go to the social side and weigh in on Neil Diamond. I triple dog dare you :-)

i will have to  check out this other thread/poll youre talking about. I havent been reading/posting as much here lately (been super busy and 2 sick kids to take care of here) but did want to comment here on 2 things...who died from STyx?? i had no idea... also the Alice in Chains thing does make me sad. I watch Celebrity Rehab, and Layne's mom was on the last 2 episodes.(Layne was the singer for AIC who died of a drug overdose)  Mike (the former bassist is in the rehab for methadone/heroin addiction) and the most recent episode was extremely touching as they had Mindy McCready sing a song and show a slide show of the celebs in the background, and Layne's mom spoke a very moving piece. That episode had me BAWLING and not a dry eye in that room on the show either.
Now, tell me who died from STyx??

WOW !   You listed all of those bands off the top of your head?  You are a brainiac!

I voted for Neil Diamond.  He's getting older(aren't we all) but, as far as I know, he only smoked cigarettes, quit in'86, and doesn't drink etc...He's still putting out some great music and still writing.  I like his older music...

Well, that's my two cents...

Honestly, the whole things a bad idea.  I don't want to have to turn my volume down every time I come on here.  Because you know what?  Not everyone wants to listen to Neil Diamond or the righteous brothers or Janis Joplin in a continuous loop!  Sorry to be a downer, but the age range on this site is from teen - geri you know?

John Panozzo, the drummer, and one of the twin Panozzo Brothers who were founding members of Styx, He died on July 16, 1996 from complications of alcoholism.  I really like Styx. It's a shame they got knocked out of the running for our official singer/songwriter because of drugs and alcohol. :-(
John was around and playing during every great song/album they ever had.

Sorry TIO,
Greebs

ps...OIFMc09....Um, I hate to break it to you, but we are joking around here about the whole songwriter thing-except for the Righteous Brothers you mention as an option... because we are not joking around about them and they are not in the running for our soundtrack because they had a death caused by a drugs/alcohol overdose...........anyway, hahaha-wer're having some fun here. Perhaps we can get you a sense of humor for Christmas? I'm sure they come in all age ranges....you know, from teen - geri.

Hello, I'm Triny.  I love AIC and was bawling my eyes out at the last Celebrity Rehab. When I was in highschool I met Layne and he was one of the nicest people you would ever want to know. There music is powerful and after all these years of listening to the songs, his lyrics still make a great impact. I really hope Mike finds his way out from "down in a hole"    It's interesting, I'm not sure if it was you or someone else who was talking about Celeb Rehab, but I worry too about when he goes home. His father is a drug addict as well and I don't think he really wants help. This is not going to go over well when he sees him again. Much like Amber's mother on the first celeb rehab parental guilt seems to be a b*tch.

Hope you have a great day. Blessings to you and yours:)

First off...yes, there is some age showing going on.
Secondly, Three dog night, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, The Doors and AC-DC are not eligible as they all have deaths caused by drug/alcohol overdoses....sorry to rain on the parade....oh, and even the Beattles are guiltly by proxy-their first manager OD'd and died. So they should probably be out also.
Surprisingly, NOBODY in Iron Butterfly OD'd or died....which is amazing considering the song:   INNA-GODDA-DA-VITA.....you wanna talk about somebody being seriously gorked out of their mind!!! Yikes! How many drugs do you have to be on to talk like that?!?

How can you even suggest the Rolling Stones as an option for our drug and alcohol forum with a straight face......that's like suggesting Michael Jackson for.........okay, self check. You see where I'm going.
Ya' gotta love the Stones and have some respect for them. They actually managed to not have anyone OD and die from drugs....which is a miracle in and of itself. "SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL"............and ...."GIMME SHELTER"
now that's music.
Okay...Stones are in. They are symbols of triumph over drugs (and drugs and more drugs and even more drugs..........)

btw thx for posting this thread..im loving the BLast from the Past here - all these old bands I havent heard the names of for years, if not decades! THin LIzzy! I didnt know anyone still alive these days knew of them still, LOL.  I used to go through my older brothers record albums starting when I was like 5 yrs old (this was in the early-mid 70's) and I knew pretty much every band there was then as he had a wide variety in his taste for music.   He knew some obscure ones too- let me think if i can recall any of their names to throw out here and see if anyone else ever heard of them

Caravan
Tangerine Dream
Atilla (a band I believe Billy Joel started out in eons ago)
Jay Ferguson (I think his first name was Jay...lol)
Peter Gabriel

LOL my brother didnt care- he was always the coolest big brother (still is). I used to wait for him to get home during the summer when I was out of school and could stay up all night (he worked 2nd shift) and we would listen to records or a good radio station and he would make lists of new songs they would play. He used to have tons of yellow legal pads filled with "new songs" on them LOL (yes we are a weird family i guess). OMG!?! that is so funny...my older brother thumped on me endlessly BUT I have many brothers. When I was working a second shift (right out of high school) I would get home and my little brother would be waiting up for me (I'm a few years older than him) and we would sit up half the night listening to the radio and I would make lists of ALL THE NEW SONGS and then talk with my little brother about all the different bands etc. and on my days off we'd go to the record store and flip through the new albums to see if we could find any of the new songs we put on our list.
That is so weird. I love those memories....and I know that my little brother always refers to me as his 'favorite sibling' and he loved our time together. I guess it's nice hearing it from the younger kids point of view. I hope my brother thinks I'm as cool as you think your big brother is!

Um, so far we have (bands/singers that are drug free or overcame their drug problems and didn't lose anybody) But, they have to have good music and you have to say their name in conjuntion with 'Substance Abuse Community' without feeling like a hypocrite:
Harry Chapin, Tangerine Dream (they ROCK), Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, Kiss, Sound Garden, Metallica, Tesla, Iron Butterfly, Jim Croce, Peter Frampton, Deepheat and the Jock Straps, Peter Gabriel, Jerry Jeff Walker....I really think Ozzie needs to be on the list. He's managed to overcome a lot....and when I say his name with Substance Abuse Community I think 'yep, he belongs there'...anybody else want to weigh in?

People/groups who don't make the list because they aren't good musician....let me know where I"m wrong:
Percy Sledge, Bobby Sherman, Donovan, Burl Ives, Donnie and Marie, Pat Boone

What say you all...overall it's pretty depressing looking for our soundtrack...we'd better step it up a notch or Satan may call and ask to borrow our soundtrack to play on a continuous loop down there as punishment for his new arrivals......

On the IN list are:
OZZIE, Rage against the Machine, U2, Linkin Park (the lead singer overcame drug addiction and is very outspoken as an anti-drug advocate), The Mighty, Mightly Bosstones, The Verve Pipe, Eurythmics, the Eagles, CCR, Jethro Tull, Third Eye Blind, Three Doors Down, Crash Test Dummies, Fleetwood Mac (they're all clean and sober-it took some doing but let's be proud of them), Tom Petty (without the Heart Breakers)

OUT are Counting Crows, Van Halen (Eddie still struggles with Booze), Jane's Addiction (Bummer, cause they rock),
Blank

You are right, Chicago is in and Hall and Oates are (barely) IN ...but they are IN

ps--we tend to goof around a lot. It's the easiest way to deal with a very sad reality sometimes. Sorry for harshing on you...it was first thing in the a.m and though your sense of humor wasn't turned on yet-my tolerance definitely wasn't.
It's all water under the bridge now. thanks for the suggestions......Our soundtrack is looking a little bit better than it was 1/2 an hour ago.
Blank
333612_tn?1302886990
The IN crowd:
Collective Soul, Lynard Skynard , Allman Brothers, Phish, Pink Floyd (they overcame a lot but are all clean and sober and still great musicians), Elton John, Billy Joel, Dr. Ralph Stanely and the Clinch Moutain Boys (seen em LIVE in concert--amazing), Soul Asylum.

The OUT crowd:
Oasis, Guns and Roses, Velvet Revolver

I'm now going to wait to see if anyone else weighs in........if not, I guess our soundtrack list is done for right now..............let me know if you disagree with any of the IN groups

Well, you know...at my age I don't have much else to do but reminisce about music with the great, great, great grandkids. I love my new Eminem CD- they sure take care of ol' g-g-g-grandma. I dated a guy that really broke my heart back then, so I've pretty much blocked out the whole decade-music and all.

so, any opinions on how our 'draft' final music list is looking? I think we are up to almost 80 posts on this thread. It would be cool if we could break 100 posts. Everyone just needs to keep the suggestions coming in.......

CLEANMOM....OMG!! I can't believe we forgot Simon and Garfunkle......people need to keep posting until we feel pretty solid we've got all the musicians that are deserving of being on our soundtrack!! Dig deep into memories long filed away. Keep the good suggestions coming! Like I said to OIF, I'd like to break the 100 posts barrier.

what about Captain and Tennille? lol   Alvin and The Chipmunks?   Boston? Santana?  The Knack? Rush? The Police? U2?  Not sure those were mentioned already

Ok, so hows about some country?? Can't forget about good ol Bosefus!
Blank
333612_tn?1302886990
Here's my opinions:
Triumph...........they are IN for sure, in fact, can't say IN enough when it come to them...
Boston.... IN,
Santana-did some drugs but are okay now so IN,
Captain and Tennille stink...so I vote OUT,
Police are IN,
U2 already mentioned and are IN,
The Knack.......hold the phone
REO Speedwagon IN IN IN......
Eddie Money-he's alive and a drug/alcohol overdose just about crippled him...but he got lucky and can still walk and claims to be clean...so I vote he is IN,

Um, INXS..stroke and choke so I vote OUT (too many bad life choices there).

Believe it or not I really don't like Steely Dan or Bob Seger at all..so I vote they are OUT (I really dislike their music) so I'll leave the final say up to someone else..................

BUT the lead singer of Steely Dan is DONALD FAGAN and he is IN IN IN in my opinion ,nanyone remember the soundtrack to the movie Heavy Metal?!? He sang 'True Companion '
and on that note,
let's not forget Don Felder (from the Eagles) he did two amazing songs on that album: 'Heavy Metal (Take a Ride)'  and  'All of You'....so he is so far IN, that he went back out and then all the way back IN again !!!!

Okay...a few others I'm thinking of now...Not exactly hard rock but...

James Taylor...big druggie but still making music and seems clean now...

Dan Folgerberg...nice music back in the day...died 2 years ago of cancer  :(

Oh and what about Queen?   I know Mercury died but not from drugs...

Blank

Jay-Z    Beyonce   Katy Perry      Lady GaGa     Daughtry   Nickelback     just some newer bands to cover the  generational gap   not sure of their drug/alcohol usage, but not too sure of anyone on this forum either...    I love BoyzIIMen

REO Speedwagon,   Boston,  Black Sabbath,  and heaven forbid yes Bon Jovi, Journey,  Queen, AC/DC, bands that a lot of us "danced to the music"  and to this day I love to listen to them.........  and still dance too.

If you are looking for  a poster child of bands......   have to say it would be Gene Simmons from Kiss.......  he never drank, did drugs, and managed the band as well as a member....

My honest opinion, music is like politics...a bit of tolerance would be nice ..  there is no absolute right or wrong.....   However more so with music,  I think most have forgotten the arts.  Whether that be a painting or dance or music (from symphonies to ballet to jazz, etc etc) ...  for me it is essential to the soul.     And I am sure if I were to list all the music I really like, it would bore most to tears.....  eclectic interest I will always strive for, or so I hope.

OIFMc    What are your interests and favorites, I would really like to know, you kinda got cut off earlier !!  Thank you if you are willing to share! :)

Yes Vicki, I was joking.......   so many judgements and myths flying.......my point is, how can we truly know another's life?  In all honesty we can't.....  and music:  rock or jazz or an opera or soul or country or deep southern baptist or strings or a flute ......  in my humble opinion it is a necessary element that feeds the soul..... and that is hard to put in a box.  Especially a box filled with judgement....  but then I am one that thinks Micheal Jackson had incredible talent.....    I think I am a bit odd here :)     i hope you have never seen me sit in judgement of others, however if I caused you doubt then I am so very sorry...  I hope you know that would never be my intent.

Lateaugust~   Thanks for that...I thought you were joking...sort of tongue in cheek...

But I always like to make sure...so I ask.

Yes,music feeds the soul...I agree.  This whole thread started off, and still is,pretty funny.  It was meant to be funny...nothing serious at all.

I thought Michael Jackson was a HUGE talent;a genius. I never understood his proclivity toward young children...but think he was a kid himself in an adult body. We'll never know now...

And,no, I have never seen you sit in judgement of anyone. I've read your posts. You always come across as a sage and loving person.

I know we've been silly on this thread and, I have to say, it's been fun. We all need a little levity   :)

I agree with Late August, who i think is always on point with her comments.
Shouldnt it be a more contemporary person then Neil Diamond,I dont even know who he is.
What kind of music did Diamond play.
Was he the calypso singer who sang Day-O?
My Grandmother used to listen to that guy.
I cant believe anybody still listens to him,why would you want him to be the voice of the forum?
My vote is for The Killers or Kings of Leon

TIO...I'll make you a deal...if Neil Diamond gets hit by a train then Barry will be a shoe in for the 'IN' list....but not a moment sooner

dominosarah....gotta love Nightranger--they're IN......Blackfoot...IN.

Vicki.....James Taylor is IN.....Stevie Wonder......IN

As for 38 Special.....I don't know if it would be appropriate to have an official singer/band  for the forum that has the name of a gun as their title (remember, this is serious stuff we're voting on here) my gut feeling is to say they're OUT..............what say you all??

Blank

nope...Neil is NOT in the same boat as Barry. Barry is only allowed in Neil's boat IF Neil is hit by a train......I highly doubt that will happen so as far as I'm concerned Neil is the MAN and Barry Manlow is spam!!

Personally, I think satire is a lost art...or perhaps just lost on some....    That being said,  I still vote no on Neil Diamond: god fearing- tax paying- straight as a frigging arrow (I mean that morally, not sexually, just so no one misunderstands)-voting citizen- that I am :)  my honest all joking aside vote  would have to go tp The Beatles.  Without a doubt, the true artists of "my" generation.....  maybe some other generations  as well....
Blank
222369_tn?1274478235
OK, I haven't read this whole topic, but I don't get the idea of picking some squeaky clean person to be the "official singer". Wouldn't it be better to pick someone who'd battled this terrible disease and made an example of themselves as a clean and sober musician? the names that come to mind right off the bat are Eric Clapton, who's battled his own alcohol and drug use and has gone on to open a rehab facility and donate literally millions of dollars to it's upkeep.  Or maybe Stevie Ray Vaughn, who battled his own demons before dying in a freak helicopter crash clean and sober. Even someone as cheesy as Elton John, who has gotten clean and works tirelessly for tons of charities. I think these are the real musical heroes.
