Steroid shots?

Steroid shots?

I just made an appointment with my doctor, actually the PA – and they told me to come in at 5:15 today (I love that they are open late and on weekends).  I am going to see about getting steroid shots in my back to help with the pain.  Has anyone had these?

cali - i just went for one but since i had so much inflamation (inflammation) (it's my cervical spine - neck) they have to try again..

but what i can tell you is i know ALOT of people who swear by it.  especially lower back (that's where most the folks i personally know had it done.)  SWEAR by it... says it relieves their pain immediately...

mine is lower back, too.  the pa said i had to make an appt with the doc to get the cortisone shots.  i am going to try it.  she gave me some patches, not fentynl, but the kind that you apply directly to the pain site.  she also gave me a med that is supposed to help with nerve pain (haven"t had the time to research it yet).  she wants to do another set of xrays and an mri since i can't get my last one since hubby was in the service at the time and no one seems to be able to find my records.  ugh...

well, ithink getting an mri is a GREAT idea.. it's the only way to pinpoint the problem...

i had one years ago and it showed buldging disks in one part of my lower back.  but it has gotten worse over time and now radiates down my leg and it is really bad in my hip/butt area.  sciatic (spelling?) nerve issue is what they are thinking.  i wish i had the first mri so they could compare them and see if the condition has worsened, although i'm fairly certain it has.  i have also had three pregnancies in four years which was not easy on the ol' back.

Yes. depomedrol (steroids) shots work like a dream for joint inflamation (inflammation). I have had them in my knees, shoulders, fingers and one hip for RA but not my spine. My sister in law did have them in her spine and they helped her a lot.

Is that the same as cortisone?

My understanding is that cortisone is the over-the-counter name for topical steroids -there are many, many different types of steroids. Depomedrol is the name of one of the highly used liquid, injectable steroids used for inflamation (inflammation) and allergic reactions. The steroids that athelets use are different and more potent, thus the illegal classification and depomedrol is NOT like the ones the atheletes use so don't be afraid of that.
