I hope you get this...I just (9/16) picked up your thread.
I sincerely hope your grandfather's condition is improving. Your grandfather's physicians can best explain the situation, but I will chime in with a few insights:
1. Many times an elderly person's hip breaks and they fall...rather than the opposite...which we frequently assume.
2. Anethesia takes awhile to get out of the system. The first clue is that the patient will produce urine through their catheter. The next step is when they can produce urine after the catheter is removed. That is the beginning point of recovery from the anesthetics.
3. The best remedy is for the patient to get up and walk around to help the body's functions return to normal, to get some cardio-vascular (heart) challenge, as well as to get the respiration going. The lower lobes of the lung are the last hiding place for the anethesic. Of course, pneumonia significantly complicates and delays recovery.
4. Staph infection after a hip injury is not uncommon. They have some great drugs to fight this.
5. Morphine depresses the respiratory system, so getting your grandfather off it is important to his respiratory recovery.
My sincerest best for your grandfather's recovery. And, again, please talk to his physician before arriving at any conclusions.

Oh my gosh, they JUST stopped the morphine today because they think it could have something to do with it!!! I guess we'll see over the next few days...I bet you thats it!! Thank you so much for your response!!!!!!!!
Hi Girl,
I've been so busy! I will summarize my dads email and email you tonight...for whatever reason, I can't forward you emails! I will do that tonight, and I know I have promised you a million times but it seems like every time I promise to get back on here later in the day or night, one thing or another comes up. Often times when I read emails, I only have time to do that and think to myself, ok, I'll respond to everyone later tonight, and then I forget. I just pulled out my appt. book and wrote it in there. I check it every night to see what I have the next day, so I'll see it before I go to bed and remember to email you tonight. I'm so sorry, Road. You've been so patient. I AM NOT blowing you off hun, lol...be patient with me. Love, Em
I am so sorry to hear about your grandfather. I am not, in any way, a medical professional, so I cannot help you with that aspect of the problem. I can, however, share with something that happened to my mom.
My mom was in a very serious auto accident years back, and she needed severl surgeries. One of which happened to be a hip surgery. During that surgery they had, apparently, given her too much morphine (although they certainly never admitted it) and she had a reaction. I was there when they wheeled her into the OR and I was there when she woke up. I went home to rest and returned the following morning. When I walked in her room, she took one look at me and began screaming "Killer", "Killer". I was stunned to say the least. I ran from the room and got the nurse in charge. She told me that my mom had woke up early in the morning and began telling the staff that I had killed my hubby and two brothers on the lawn of the hospital. Long story short, it took 4 days for her to come out of it. I slept at the hospital but I could not go near her. She TRULY believed that I had killed the family.
Your grandfather may be having an allergic reaction to some strong medications, such as the anesthesia. then again, his age is certainly a factor, as you already know. There is a host of things that could be going on. All you can really do now is wait and pray. My heart breaks for you, as this is a difficult time. You are certainly welcome to post here anytime. Please do. There are several nurses who frequent this forum and may be able to help you.
I will keep you in my prayers......
so sorry to hear that...I have a grandmother who broke her hip a little younger than that..They also had a hard time waking her..She didn't need to be restrained though...And she also caught pneumonia after...She did have a full recovery..
i wish him and your family the best.
