You're welcome. It's the same news report that I got from NBC last night.
My state is #1 in deaths from overdose. That's very scary guys. There are only about 2 million people in NM and it's the 6th largest state. This only reflects deaths from rx's and it's much higher than deaths from alcohol and illegal drugs combined!
I'm very happy and proud to not be enabling this cycle any longer! So out of that loop!!
Good article, thanks. I like the site too and just bookmarked it.
They also included information from an outside study that said that drug overdoses just exceded motor vehicle deaths in the nation........
Well, in my state...today's newspaper front page headline:
State Ranks first in painkiller abuse, 9th in overdose deaths!!
Article states that nearly 5% of Americans 12+ say that they have abused painkillers in the last year. The lowest rates are in Neb. and Iowa.
Here's the article quoting the CDC's statistics:

So,who feels like typing all that in?? LOL
florida doctors give more prescriptions of oxys then the other 49 states combined. they have store fronts that are called "pill mills".
Doctors in Florida prescribe 10 times more oxycodone pills than every other state in the country combined. People come from all over the Southeast to visit the state's pain clinics.
different states have different substance abuse issues. some more cocaine and pot, others opiates.
20-30% is huge. as rick said how many addicts are willing to admit they use?
It just amazes me how many are addicted. Shades of Brave New World!
Okay...I now have the complete story. What the news here was saying:
NM leads in drug overdose deaths and not substance abuse. They (the CDC) estimated 4 per100K people die every year from prescription drug overdose and I'm sure that's accurate...it would be about 80 people a year and that doesn't include alcohol and illegal drugs, of course.
How true, getting an active addict to tell the truth about their addiction is a tough job. Heck the lie to themselves so why would they tell the truth on a survey.
I googled and found this info:
Prescription drugs are the second most commonly abused category of drugs, behind marijuana and ahead of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and other drugs. The National Institutes of Health estimates that nearly 20 percent of people in the United States have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons.
The source is from:

They didn't say how many people were addicted but apparently the CDC has the figures. This is a huge state but not a huge poulation compared to NY or Cali. So,to make it to #1 is pretty bad depending on how they figured this out. No one said if the number was per capita or how the data was obtained but there are only 2 million people in the entire state. I sure don't believe anyone can get a very accurate figure on abuse unless I was the only one lying all the time!
