* Hubby on Suboxone... working great! *

by lisa6013, Jul 05, 2009 02:04PM
Hi,

I know that there are tons of posts on here regarding Suboxone, but wanted to share.... Hubby is addicted to hydrocodone and oxycodone... whichever he could get.  Taking about 15 per day regardless of strength.  This has been going on for years on and off.  Started off taking them for chronic back pain (like so many other folks).  We had a long discussion, and I found him a doc that was DEA certified to prescribe Suboxen.  He has been on it now for about 4 days.  WHAT A DIFFERENCE!  I have watched this poor man go through the horrible withdrawals many times when he tried to stop before.... We made sure he got to see this new doc about 24 hours after his last hydro.  He feels normal, he can work, he can sleep, he can eat, etc.  Sometimes when he takes it, he feels a high, but says that is slowly going away.  He has NO cravings to go back to the other pills...  So, so far so good!  We don't yet know how long he will have to be on this Suboxone, and have read that the withdrawals from this can be awful.  His doc said that when it was time to get off of them, we would do it in such a way, that he will not suffer.... so we shall see... I just wanted to share my story.  I am so very thankful to have my husband back!!!!!!!!

hugs to all!

some will argue that there is a way to get off sub painlessly...and it is one of the most popluar topics here as of late for those in wds from it...it is a legal narcotic so he is not abusing it..and this is a good thing..a partial agonist but much much stronger than the 2 u named he was on previously..i have take n it for a few weeks here and there..didnt do my issue work..just used it cos i was outa my doc...i was a 100 mghyro user and 2 mgs of sub made me feel like i was on top of the world..sio when it was time to stop i didnt choose this drug as i liked it better than my doc..we r all different..thing is he needs to do his work on himself and us the sub as a tool to help him reach cleandom////he is now on a very strong narcotic so it is not abnormal that he has no crvings...he probably feels hunky dory....just know getting off this drug after a few weeks use is no picnic...and his plan needs to be discussed with his dr...they can work tgether while ur guy ges to meeting and works thru the issues that caused him to use//and steer clear of getting drugs illegaly in the mean time..good luck to both of u..just be sure u educate urself on the powerful drug ur guy is on....it punches some power and detox from sub can be horrid..can make people return to their doc to skip wd from the sub..have a plan and stick to it

Congratulations, that is wonderful!!!  I started on Suboxone and moved to Subutex after about 3 months.  It seems the Subutex works a lot better for me!  It has to be a great relief in your heart to see your hubby like that..ugh, I know my fiancee went through what you are going through with me and just to see how he would just look at me sometimes and I saw so much happiness in his face...it made me feel even better!!

Keep us updated  :)

My only advice is to try and keep the length of time he is on sub to a minimum, here soon I would start to taper down. Like worried said sub (buprenorphine) is much stronger than oxy/hydrocodone so it can become a big problem if not taken seriously. Just for information purposes I started at 8mgs/daily, stemming from my methadone addiction. I was at 8mgs for about a month and started to taper alot quicker than my doctor had advised. I was on sub for a total of 18wks, got down to where I was taking a tiny little piece, probably about .25mgs, literally just a tiny sliver. In the beginning months it is much easier to taper down and get to a daily dose around 1-2mgs, the last mg or two really are tough. I became just as addicted to sub as any other opiate, I felt great while I was on it, but I was addicted and dependent upon it in the end. Some of the most successful experiences with sub are ones who take it for anywhere from 3-30days, not to say that us that take it longer werent successful, but I firmly believe that you dont want to get caught up in long term maintence therapy with suboxone, just like you wouldnt want to with methadone. In the end suboxone/subutex can be a great tool for some in their recovery, but it can also become a bigger problem than we had before, so make sure you and your husband do your research and come up with a plan and stick to it, preferablly a short term use. I know when I first started I felt so good that I figured I would take it for a long time, thankfully I found this place and learned that in general shorter treament periods are almost always in your best interest. Sorry for the rambling and I hate to sound negative because I really do believe sub has tremendous value, but so many doctors are either misinformed or just enjoy the money that sub treatment brings in and sometimes promise outcomes that are unrealistic. I wish you guys all the best, keep posting here about your husbands experience and any questions you may have, we can all benefit from learning more about this tricky drug.    Take Care!

I am glad you have your husband back. I have been on suboxone since last august and now am taking 0.5mg (started at 16mg). So far it has been painless. I have been taking it slow and have had no withdrawal symptoms so far. I have found that it really helps with my back pain too but everyone is different as far as suboxone helping for pain. My husband is also glad to have his wife back. I am also working on my recovery (suboxone support group and individual therapy). It is important to work on the issues that led your husband to use to begin with. Anyway, best wishes to you and your husband.
