35 wk Pregnant and just came off of Heroin

My baby will be born in the beginning part of November.  From  July - September I was using heroin (averaging about 1 nif per day) .  I am 35 weeks now, and have stopped using completely for 5 days.  During my time STUPIDLY using, I was not doing any other drugs, and I was keeping up with all of my vitamins.  I did use half a sub (divided into 3 days) to come off.  I feel fine now and strong enough to know I don't ever want to go back.  All my doc visits have been perfect, baby's heartbeat was always strong.  I am just wanting to know if there is anybody that can relate or can tell me if my baby will be ok when born?

That's awesome you were able to do that. That gives me hope. I'm 23 weeks pregnant and was using oxycodone 30mg for a month then switched to 6 bags of herion a days or a month, so I have been using for 2 months. I was an IV herion user for two year and cold turkey detoxed myself July 29th 2015. I was CLEAN and became pregnant with the 3ed child right away (never used drugs with my other two girls). I don't understand why I picked up again fully knowing I was pregnant. I'm sure my thought process was 'well I'll only do it once a week'  but that never happens. It becomes a daily thing. I'm starting detox tonight with subs. In haven't done anything in 24 hours and don't really feel withdrawal symptoms. I'll post back in a couple days to let you guys know how it went!!

Any news on how you and baby are doing? I just found out im 8 weeks pregnant and have been a continous heroin user for 2.5 years now. I have gone to rehab 3 times and have gotten clean all 3 times and also got clean on my own with suboxone a couple of times this year but have been using heroin when i found out i was pregnant. I only sniff (never IV) but i use a lot. I have an appt with my doctor on monday and i am going to tell him my history and ask to be put on methadone or suboxone (whichever is safer). Can anyone relate to my situation? I am really scared and want nothing but for my baby to be healthy.. any thoughts will help. Thanks

Wondering how the end of your pregnancy went as well as your delivery and of course how you and baby are now...

Hello. Congratulations on your pregnancy and well done for stopping the heroin use. You are probably already be aware that narcotic withdrawals can be especially taxing on the unborn child, even though the mother may be coping well. I know you must be desperate for reassurances. The truth is, there isn't any definitive way of knowing (without medical intervention) how the baby may be coping with your detox or the few months of heroin use.

The best thing you can do for the child (and yourself) is to be honest with a trusted medical professional. If you had just stopped using heroin, I would have thought it was unlikely that the hospital staff would have discovered the heroin use from a fecal/blood sample (maybe a hair folicle though) Heroin is quickly excreted and difficult to detect and differentiate from legitimate opiates at the best of times. However, suboxone takes much longer to expel and  would probably get picked up. Thats where I think you may be found out. I assume the suboxone is unprescribed, since a half tablet detox cant be a real doctors taper plan.

I know its not what you want to hear, but you really need to disclose the drug use and makeshift detox  rather than sweep it under the carpet and hope noone finds out. If you dont confess your drug use and a subsequent test on the baby shows opiate metabolites, you could find social services arent nearly as forgiving as they may have been had you been honest from the beginning. Its an untenable gamble and not worth the risk.

On the whole, pregnant women who are prescribed prescription opiates/opioids manage to have healthy babies more often than not. It happens every day. Heroin, however,  is often adulterated with harmful materials and made by backyard chemists with rudimentary, unsanitary equipment. You dont mention your preferred route of administration (unless nif -sniff?)  but IV drug use exposes you both to a whole new set of undesired consequences/risks.

I dont want to lecture as I have no doubt that you are already guilt addled and haunted by your decision to use heroin whilst pregnant. You have been really brave and couragous and taken some major positive steps to rectify and redeem yourself.  Once again, congratulations on your preganancy and a big WELL DONE for stopping. If you tell someone (a doctor)  now about your short term heroin use, NOONE could ever say you never tried your very best for your baby.

Please listen to these ladies!! I was in yur shoes only not with heroin. I was about34 weeks along when I went on a two week binge with dilauded using about 30 mg a day. It was the scariest Time of my life. I was alone and felt helpless!! I loved that little baby inside me more than anything. But my addiction once again took over. Not knowing what to do or what kinda damage I may have done I turned here. And these amazing ladies and some gentlemen pretty much saved me. I came clean with my ob and she made note of it in my paperwork so that way if my babies poop just so happened to be tested they would have a record of it and my baby would not be taken from me. She reassured me that in some cases pain pills are prescribed to pregnant women and for a short period of tone should not do harm. But only if the potential risk is less then the risk of not using them. I'm not sure about heroin. It is such a hard drug. All I know is you need to listen to these ladies and ask for help from your ob. Explain to her you are an addict!! She will work with you!! An I know how scary and lonely of a place it is using while pregnant. You love that baby but just can't seem to get control of your addiction. It's hard and I'm proud u stopped. But it is dangerous to stop on your own. U need medical help. Please please please talk to your dr and keep clean for that baby's sake. They don't choose to use these drugs.
And may I say I have a perfect and healthy baby girl. Who is my entire world. I look in her eyes every day and wonder how I ever put her in harms way like that. Good luck mama! You know what to do!

Please call your doctor right away and talk to him/her about this.  Like others mentioned, even if you do stay clean, they will likely find out and everything will be much worse.  There's the potential they could take the baby away from you.

As hard as it is, you have to tell your OB.  Don't worry too much about that as they've heard everything.  The important thing is to make sure your baby is okay.  This way the doctor will know what to look for to make sure all is well with the baby and you.  Stopping abruptly can harm the baby.  Your doctor will know what to do to keep the baby safe.

And you definitely need to be in some kind of program, AA/NA or an addiction counselor.  You cannot go back to using and be a good mom.  You also need to tell the doctor you took the sub.  Since you're 35 weeks, this cannot wait.  You need to do this right away.  I'm sure your OB will have ideas for support for you, too.

Please let us know what's going on.  You'll get a lot of good advice and support here.

If u don't go to ur doctor NOW+B 100&honest u WILL LOSE UR CHILD because they will test the babies1st stool4drugs+that stool can show what u have done as far back as5months pregnant. If u r honest w/ur Dr now they can b aware of any problems that may arise+treat the baby if he/she has any w/d symptoms. Also being honest will make sure that there r NO surprises+u won't lose custody of ur baby. The worst thing u can do is not say anything.U won't get away w/it and I'f u lie to the bitter end that honestly makes the DRS,nurses, family welfare mad. It's more important to be honest now+make sure ur baby is safe. Also on another thought.U need rehab sweetie. If u couldn't stop using while u r pregnant(eventhough u love that baby+I'm sure don't want2harm it)u can't stop urself obviously &need some real help.Being honest & saying u want help to ur Dr is the best way to get some options.Just curious how old r u+how long have u been using?
I will b praying for u+ur little one.

You need to talk to your doctor about this ASAP.  Stopping abruptly is not only hard on you but also the baby.  Most hospitals are now checking for drugs in newborns so if the OB knows there wont be any surprises.
