8 days in ICU with seizures

by litbee, May 17, 2008 03:04PM
I have a female friend from high school who has been a daily drinking alcoholic and who's drink of choice is vodka.  She had 3 seizures ( grand ,maul included)  about 5-6 yrs ago and went to rehab fro 6 days and stayed sober for several months.  Since, she has been drinking as ussual and had a seizure a month ago and then experienced double vision. CT Scan showed nothing and then vision cleared.  Last week her boyfriend (enabler) found her inthe floor and took her to the ER.  Mild heart attack.  While on the cardiac floor the 1st day started seizures and has been having them since 8 days.  She was on life support and seizures stopped for 35 hrs or so and I called her in the ICU and she had a seizure today while I was on with her. (She started crying after saying she wasn't doing good and then started seizures I guess.  I have not been closed to her over the yrs due to her disease state and when my Dad died 4 yrs ago she came to his Memorial and we have been occasional phone friends since. ( I lived with her and her parents in senior yr of high school, so we were close.  I know I CANT HELP HER.  I know she needs rehab and more.  What I do not know is why is she still having seizures.  Is it brain damage from a seizure, maybe?  This poor women (49) named Jean needs your prayers!  Can anyone tell me what they think about this seizure activity?   Concerned Friend

I am not sure if she is having them due to medical condition that has been diagnosed or not...some people have seizure disorders ...alcohol withdrawal can also cause seizures for heavy drinkers...my father in law would try and quit and he would have seizures and we would have to take him to the ER....I have had patients who are heavy drinkers and a couple days into their stay all kinds of crazy stuff starts happening and they end up in restraint...called DTs..i am not sure of all of her history...i hope she is ok

Oh honey,
I feel so bad for you. I wish I had an answer for you. you know all this **** we put in our bodys is poison.. and I think the drinking is even harder on our bodys. But it's all bad.
Can you talk to someone at the hospital? maybe they can tell you something.
There are a few people on here in the medical field. Hopefully they will ring in with something soon...

My prayer are with you and her...
