Adderall

by kristin, Aug 04, 2000 12:00AM
I was prescribed Adderall (adderrall) for ADD and Prozac for depression a few months ago. I am doing well on both. I recently started binge drinking sometimes with my husband. We have 4 or 5 beers 3 or 4 times a week. Now I feel less able to concentrate than ever. I have a lot of trouble remembering things, and feel "spacey" alot. Can Anyone please tell me exactly what the consequences of drinking alcohol and taking Adderall (adderrall) & Prozac. Answers will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

The general rule is you should not consume alcohol while on any antidepressant.  There is some recent research suggesting that even the consumption of a small amount of alcohol can cause a real setback in the treatment of depression, perhaps lasting several months.  Regardless of what the literature says about any drug and its interactions with alcohol or other drugs, LISTEN TO YOUR OWN BODY.  Clearly these drugs, combined with alcohol, are having a negative effect on your body/brain chemistry.  Therefore, the obvious answer is to stop drinking or at least drink much more moderately.  Finally, since you are at an addiction website I should add that your binge drinking indicates you may be an alcoholic or on your way.  I seem to recall a study several years ago that linked Prozac to an increase in alcohol consumption in some patients.  Unfortunately I didn't really read it so I don't know the details.

Thanks for your advice. I know it seems obvious, but I kinda needed to hear that from some one else. by the way, I've read some of your advice to others and you seem to know a great deal about these subjects, are you a doctor?

You are not supposed to mix alcohol with any anti-depressants, especially the SSRI'S. Call up a search on prozac, adderal and their warnings about the effects with other substances and you will see the answers about avoiding alcohol.

My Doctor cut me off from out-patient care when I relapsed on booze while on her prescribed medication Klonopin, another drug not supposed to be mixed with alcohol. She cut me off from the Klonopin right away and I was forced to go in-patient for alcohol detox. I tried to fight it but the seizures were too much to handle and almost killed me.

She said the mixing of the two would have eventually killed me and that was why she cut me off. I was unaware of those dangers at that time.

You're welcome.  No, I'm not a doctor, I just slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night.  Just kidding.  :-)

I AM COMMENTING ON THE THE QUESTION KRISTIN ASKED CONCERNING ADDERALL (adderrall). A FEW MONTHS AGO I WAS GIVEN THIS STIMULANT ALONG WITH AN ANTI-DEPRESSANT CALLED EFFEXOR. IT DID A GREAT JOB FOR ME THE FIRST FEW MONTHS AND THEN I NOTICED THE EXACT SAME SYMTOMS YOU DESCRIBED. THE ONLY DIFFERANCE IS I DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL.UNTIL NOW, I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME. HOPEFULLY SOMEONE HAS THE ANSWER TO THIS.
